Scratchy pot question

Post by Bill Hatcher »

Volume pedal pot.

Moving the pedal with no signal through it----quiet.

Moving the pedal with guitar signal through it--scratchy.

Seems to me like this might be some DC/AC or something floating around. I forgot the trick of adding a cap or a resistor to the pot to eliminate this possibility. Someone please give me the correct cap/resistor value and where to attach it. Thanks!

I am in the process of getting a Hilton pedal. I am having no luck with current made pots these days.

Bill:

Your pot either needs cleaning or replaced. I know of no way to make "scratchiness" go away. You might try some electronic cleaner if you can get the spray inside the pot while you're waiting for the Hilton.

Hey Bill, DC on a wiper can make it scratchy. Sometimes that DC charge can come from static electricity. Do you have a matchbox or something that could be putting DC on the line to the VP?

Bill, it is quite possible to have this problem without any DC on the pot. Most likely, you just have a dirty pot. The dead spots on the pot are interrupting the signal going through it, not generating a noise........JD

the carbon tends to wear off with use - cleaning may work once, but the long term fix is replacement.
