Distortion in Steel King

Post by Randy Cook »

I am experiencing some distortion, very evident during sustain, even at very low volumes, and especially with lower pitch strings. I have eliminated possible causes with my instrument and the cables. I can't believe the amp or speaker is defective, it is only six months old, but I could be wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any ideas as to what the cause of the problem may be?

Could you have unplugged the speaker for some reason and reversed the polarity when you plugged it back in. I did that with a Peavy amp once and it had those symptoms.

Easiest thing is hook to another speaker and
check it again. That will narrow things down.
Even when an amp is not all that loud, if the ground gets disconnected temporarily (because of a bad cord), that short "buzz" can overheat the speaker voice coil just enough to make it rub.
Same as if a guitar cord accidentally gets pulled out. It won't blow the speaker, but it
just ain't the same afterwards.

I had the same problem with my FSK. What I done was I turned the pre or post gain ( ON far left, don't have amp in front of me now) to where it was only half of what I had the volume control(On right end) turned on. Now I run about 4 on the left and around 8 on the right(volume). Cleared up the distortion. I've also got most of the back of the amp covered which helps also.

I had this problem and wound up having to run with my input pad switch in and my input gain down about 10 or 11 o'clock. I have gotten to where I have been able to get more than this out of it lately but it seems to be really touchy.

I run both the pre and post all the way up and have no problems. But...I use very little volume pedal where most players use it all. Never had a problem with distortion. Only a little hiss because everything is wide open.
