Attention Mike Brown

Post by Ron Scott »

I have a hum in my reverb control with or without the reverb hooked up..Is it possible I could spray inside the control and stop this. When I turn the knob to the off position it stops making a noise thru the speaker and gets louder as I turn it up..I sent it in to have a mod kit put in a few years back and I guess they never noticed anything wrong. There are times when it does not do this but not very often..I have another Nashville 400 that never has a hum from the reverb.I like the sound of this amp and would like to use it if I can...Thank you Ron

Ron, there are a few things that could cause a hum problem. It could possibly be one of three things, ie; broken circuit pins to the reverb molex, an open ground in the reverb path or a defective 4558 IC in the reverb circuit.

This is interesting . From the very begining that i bought my new Nashville 400 in 1999 it had the same hum as well as my older Nashville . I did send my new one back to Peavey twice to get other things fixed and it still has the hum . This is a puzzle to me . Now it is to late to get any warranty work done on it . I wish that i knew enough then to have asked more questions about this hum and how to fix it . Thanks for the post . Gary .

Gary mine has always hummed when I turn the reverb knob up around 3 or 4 and gets louder as you go up from there with or without the reverb unit hooked up.Some guys tell me they have no noise at all but I have never been that lucky....Ron

Hi Ron . As i said both of my Nashville 400's have the hum in them and just about everyone that i have heard has it also . I really don't understand this . Other than this they seem to do a great job . They have lots of power and are heavy to carry . I did have two cabinets made for my older amp and it makes it much easier to carry around . In my openion the Peavey amps have always had more noise in them than usual . Why this cant be eliminated is beyond me . I know that other people will say that theirs doesn't have any noise at all but the amps around here shurley do . Maybe its just in Ohio huh ? Please understand that i'm really not trying to knock these amps or the Peavey company but i'm just being honest and thats all . It seem s to me if you pay good money for these amps that they should perform without this noise .
I know i will no doubt get hate mail for being honest but i guess it comes with the territory . This is an area that we should not be afraid to comment about because after looking at these complaints over and over again this should be eliminated in these amps . I also dont see this as our responsability either . This is something that should not be in these amps to begin with . Please forgive me if i have stepped over the line on this issue . Just to bring this to a conclusion because of this noise i cant use the reverb in either of my amps . If you mike the amps ( and should ) the noise is just to great to use the reverb . As it seems i'm not the only one that has this problem . Best regards , Gary .

Nashville 400's do not hum if all is OK. Mine had a problem from new that I attributed all the problems to the Molex connector. There was some contact problems with the Molex connector but as it turned out there was a hairline crack in the printed circuit "land" between one of the ground molex pins and the circuit board ground. Once I repaired the PC board there were no more hum problems.

I used to be an amp tech and this one drove me up the wall before I found it. This may not be what the problem is with your amps but something to consider and it is one of the things Mike Brown noted as a potential problem area.

I don't have the amp anymore but the person that bought it is happy with it and said it was "quiet".
