Power amp w/112 or FSK?

Post by Billy Carr »

I'm always looking for ways to enhance or improve tone/sound on steel guitar. Anybody got any suggestions on what kind of power amp works best with a 112 or Fender Steel King? Never have used anything other than a few delay boxes and just recently a black box.

Billy, I don't see a need for a power amp with a Nashville 112. I have come to the conclusion for me anyway that better sound comes from less equipment, especially when I start stacking pre-amps, powered effects etc. I think an amp sounds better when it is working a little bit and not just coasting. You wind up with subtle overdriven glassy sound if not very careful. I don't get into these "tone" discussions very often because I am no sound expert but it seems the more I try to add gear to improve my sound the worse it gets. Then I hook an RV3 to the 112 or a Standel and I am back in business. Please don't assume that I know what I am talking about, that is just my experience.

A Power amp won't really improve sound. If it's not there to start with, just amplifying it to a higher level isn't going to do anything for you.

Beside, if you use another Power Amp with those combo amps, you are going to need separate speakers. And, you've defeated the purpose of a combo amp.
