10" bass speakers

Post by Mike Winter »

I have a 1994 Sting Ray bass and play mostly country/country rock/old rock and roll. I recently got an empty 4x10 Hartke cabinet, all wired...I just need to get four 10" speakers to fill it. I was wondering if you guys could toss me some ideas about which ones would be good. (I sing and play drums in my band, but I play bass on the side.) My bass player uses an Eden Nemesis; my bass rig is a single 15" Peavey Black Widow, with Carvin R1000 head.)

Any ideas on the four 10's? I'm thinking about Eminence, but don't want to spend $100+ for each one. Thinking of buying better quality used, instead of low budget new. ???

Thanks

I play an Eden 4x10 cab and love it. But I'm not a speaker nut, there are others here that can give you some more specifics. Better quality used (in good condition) is often a better choice.

The bass picker I worked with in Kansas City tried a Hartke system with aluminum speakers and didn't like it. Said it had too many "highs" and not enough deep bass lows. But, he played a P bass with tape wound strings so he could get more of the upright bass sound.

Mike, check with me here at Peavey and I will provide pricing on the speakers that we use in our 410TVX and Pro 410 cabinets. We offer them both for a 4 and 8 ohm cabinet. I'll be glad to help. My toll free number is 1-877-732-8391, ext. 1180.

Mike i am amazed at the sound of two new 8 inch Imminence woofers in my Ampeg SVT100T, and it's hard to believe the lows coming from them, they cost $98.00 for both from
USS speakers. TJH

No, I'm not being facetious, you'll get WAY more output per watt than from the Eminence (or any other) speakers. Talk to Mike MacIntosh at Brownell and he should be able to help get you a line on some used units.
[This message was edited by Dave Grafe on 07 October 2005 at 09:24 PM.]

The Eminence Beta series are tremendous, and handle 250W each. JBL's might be good guitar speakers in some cases, but they aren't known for their bass drivers, which is a different ball game. "Speakkers" and "bass drivers" are not the same thing, really.

Check Avatar Speakers - they usually have decent pricing.

Really, an Eden or Acme cabiinet would be a huge improvement over the Hartke, but if you have to use it I's most definitely go with the Betas. I have a pair of 10's in a ported cab and a pair of 8's in my SWR Baby Blue. Best bass drivers for the money IMO.

I love JBL's for guitar and PSG, but the best bass i've ever heard came from an Altec 421A. Solid and punchy. TJH

I'm personally sold on SWR gear, and since they were the innovators of the multiple 10" bass speakers, I'd check out their products. I've got a 2x10 cab wired to 4 ohms and run a bridged SM400 head with it, and I make a whole lot of noise, up and down the spectrum. It's just great.

I'm also an SWR nut, but you have to watch some of their older units for Bag End speakers - great sounding until they blow...and they ALWAYS blow. Those are what I replaced with the Eminence Betas, and the bottom end is a little clearer and tighter, with more P-Bass thump to it.
