E-66 only partially bucking hum

Post by Brad Sarno »

Has anyone noticed that an E-66 pickup doesn't humbuck as well as some other humbuckers? I know that sometimes to dial in the right tone, a pickup will have one of its two coils wound differently than the other. I think that can sacrifice the ability to completely buck hum. I could swear that when I had a L-710 in there that it was near totally silent. My house is a pretty hummy environment so these things kind of stand out. Anyone notice this with the E-66?

I used E-66's for years in some pretty bad places and they were as quite as you would hope for.

Then a few months ago I bought a Wallace TT which had a great tone at low to mid volume. I had to remove it as I couldn't use it at higher volumes due to the hum and I noticed it was somewhat microphonic at higher volumes.I switched back to a XR-16 and it is dead quite at all volume levels in every room I've played.

Brad, is it possible that some hum is being induced in another piece of your signal chain? I love the sound of Truetones in my Mullen, but I can't stand much hum in the studio, and there are several venues I play that are severely hum-prone. I've got XR-16s in there now, dead quiet in the studio but the worst offending gig still makes the rest of my rig buzz a small bit. It was intolerable with the single coils, and just barely noticeable now.

Interestingly, I had a BL 912 that didn't buck all the hum in a really bad room here in NY and it was suggested to me that GeorgeL's are more hum resistant than BL's (with the implication that whatever Lawrence does to make his pickups sound good also compromise the hum bucking a bit---I cannot confirm or deny the truth of this statement). Anyway, I got an E66 exclusively for this purpose--not a personal fave, otherwise. It was a bit better in this room but actually nothing has been discovered that can tame the back room of Freddy's.

Brad:I had the same problem with those pickups in my Carter guitar.Certain studios I would get hum other studios I wouldn't get hum.I would plug in a Gibson Les Paul just to check the difference and the Gibson was silent.

Only one time the environment caused hum with Lawrence piuckups (912 and 712). I tried E-66 and it was quiet.
