Which Pickups For My Carter?

Post by Bob Snelgrove »

I've been pretty happy with the Tommy White pickups but still miss that midrange punch like my P/P.

Thinking of trying the Wallace Truetones or the Lawrence XR-16's.

Your thoughts? Image

I tried the XR-16 after a Truetone. I went back to the Truetone. The Truetone has the single coil sound I personally like.

I have the BL XR16's on my Carter and I love them -- personal choice I guess.

In the "for what it's worth" dept., the Carter was the guitar Bill had in mind when he designed the XR 16.

Anyone else who had a different pickup at first and then put on the XR's?

Bob... GeorgeL pickups[10-1) sound great in a Carter as do Wallace Truetones...talk to to John Fabian and get his opinions... It all depends on the sound YOU want as to which pickups are the best...bob
[This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 25 August 2005 at 08:13 AM.]

I listened to all the Carter samples--same guitar with different pickups installed. They all sounded so similar to me that I concluded it doesn't make all that much difference. Seems like the guitar and the player are 95% of the sound.

I started with a George L TPP, tried a BL 912 (I play 12 string, obviously) and arrived at the XR-16. The TPP was extremely microphonic. Otherwise I liked it. The 912 just wasn't right for the Carter. I had Jerry W rewind the TPP as a single coil. Sounded great but I decided that my choice was for humbucking properties. I'm satisfied with the XR. I'm not sure that I would describe its characteristics as "mid range punch" though. But I would back away from trying to describe what it does sound like. I give up on word descriptions of the sublties of stuff like this. I tend more toward gooooood and baaaaaad.
[This message was edited by Jon Light on 25 August 2005 at 01:50 PM.]

Just drop an Emmons pickup in the Carter you will feel right at home in about 1 minute. If that does not do if for you get the TT from Jerry, if still not happy just go back to a PP. Once you have had black, oh that is another topic.
