Custom Made Speaker Cabs

Post by George Redmon »

i am thinking of getting my rack system out again. I have 2 of those Nashville 115 cabs that peavey made years ago with BW speakers. Is anyone making some lighter, nice sounding cabs out their. I was thinking i could put the BW's into smaller lighter cabs, would i loose my bottom end? should i go open or closed cabs? i use tons of bass....

George, take a good look at the cabinet designs from Walker Stereo Steel. IMO he's really nailed the right cabinet design (ported) to make a black widow or JBL sound great in a small cabinet (approx. 19" square for 15" speakers). These cabs are super light and sound great. The Walkers are covered in ozite (the fuzzy stuff). Duane Marrs makes the same design in Tolex.
I'm really happy with my Walker setup.

You will loose a little bottom end with smaller cabs, but with a 15" speaker there is still adequate bottom for steel. Closed-back cabs will give a more consistent sound and a little more bass. They also protect the speakers from being blown by loud bass. Open-back speakers' sound will vary depending on what is behind the speakers. They also project sound to the rear so that drummers and bass players who are behind your speaker can hear you better. So each type has strengths and weaknesses.

I got some Marrs closed-back speakers for my JBL 15s and was a little dissapointed in the construction. I think they went a little too far in trying to keep the weight down. They are very thin plywood. The backs were 1/4" and way too flexible. I think speaker cabinets should be as rigid as possible. I replaced the backs with 1/2" plywood. The ports are simply four holes drilled in the front baffle. I added tubes, and they improved the bass, even though they are not precisely tuned. If I were to buy more speaker cabinets, I would ask lots of questions and pay close attention to the answers.

I also use the walker cabs but I have one closed back and one open back. They are built verry well and I have even played bass through them, at low volume of course.

George, some makers will put a sliding door in the back, so the cab can be used either open-backed or closed-back. If you are completely undecided, that's worth asking about.

George I use the Nashville 115E cabinets with BW 1504's --- I don't think you could get a smaller 15" cabinet ? I find them the perfect compact size, and the weight isn't too bad -- but they are good and solid, and I wouldn't want to give up that great sound for something lighter and a little more flimsy!

The Peavey cabinets, although work great, are relatively big. There are many smaller cabinets around that work as good (and some better) than the Peavey Nashville series.

I have two 12" cabinets that are clones of the Nashville 112E cabinets. A friend built some smaller cabinets and we "tuned" the partially open back on his smaller cabinets comparing it to my Nashville 112E cabinets. We were able to find the correct size opening on the back and his sound exactly like mine. He is using the same speakers as mine - the BW 1203-8.

Albert Johnson and Danna Flood I think made Dougs cabnets. I know he made Jack Dougherty's, because I picked them up. They have tuned ports , closed backs, and looks great, but not cheap. And yess they sound great. Jack uses Walker sys.
