Tuning Multiple Rigs with Peterson Strobe

Post by Larry R »

I have several guitars of the same manufacture. I tuned one of the rigs with my Peteson VSII and then saved the settings thinking that the others would tune up to the same settings. WRONG, they won't. Does anyone else have this problem? And NO I'm not going to buy a separate tuner for each rig. ha ha

Larry, I assume you are talking about pedal steel guitars from the same manufacturer. If they are different models, they may have different amounts of cabinet drop. That could require slightly different tuning. If you use an unwound 6th string, the most sensitive test for cabinet drop is to mash the A pedal alone, and watch how much the tuning of the 6th string goes flat. If your 6th string is wound, mash the B pedal and watch how much the 5th string drops.

Thanks Dave. Yes, I'm talking pedal steels.
My 6th string is not wound on any of my steels.<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Larry R on 07 July 2005 at 08:12 AM.]</p></FONT>

Each steel must be in tune with "itself". That means that the actual tuner settings will vary from steel to steel.

I use the VS-II but can't use the pre-programmed for my Franklin D-10. I had to develop my own as the preprogrammed was way off for my steel. I used the original Newman settings (E's reference to 0 not the +2.5Hz in his later charts) and then got my guitar in tune with itself and noted the variances. I then programmed that into the P1 for E9th and P2 for C6th.

Jack, that's kind of what I was thinking, each steel has to be tuned according to it's characteristics.
