Dirt–Cheap Rack Stand: Moron? Genius?
I have a SKB four-space rack case with some stuff inside that I turn back and forth to face either my steel-playing seat or my guitar-playing seat. It works O.K., but I got to thinking it might be nice to have an open rack so that I could redo the patch cords more easily, and maybe have a few more spaces available (uh-oh). I have a two-shelf coffee table that I could make into an six-space stand by buying a couple of rack rails and sawing them to fit, but I was still wandering around with a “nineteen inches… nineteen inches…” mantra going through my mind and I spied my aluminum walker. (I have to keep a walker and a cane around because of intermittent but semi-profound spinal problems.)
I measured it up and sure enough, it would be easy as pie to mount a set of rack rails using screws long enough to go through the 1” tubing. I’d have to buy a different one for the rack of course, but the Salvation Army always has them for $5 a piece. There’s enough room to mount 9 single rack units and with either some cutting or extension legs, and a little hillbilly engineering, you could put a mixer, disc recorder, keyboard (or lapsteel!) on top, for either a sitting or standing position. It’s bound to be sturdier than those flimsy spot-welded-looking jobs, and it’d be ever-so-attractive to boot. Old-folks catalogs already sell a bunch of accessories like beverage holders, headlights and clip-on cups for your spare teeth.
