Bass/Steel rack gear?

Post by Mike Winter »

Since I play bass and am learning the steel, I’m thinking I’d like to have a rack that would be easily used for both. Gear I have available:

Carvin R1000 Red Line bass amplifier (Right now it is in its own case.)

The following is in a 3 space rack:
Korg DTR-1 tuner
Lexicon MPX 100
To be added: a power conditioner, so I can have one master power switch, etc.

My speaker is a 15” Black Widow in a single cabinet, with plans to add two 10’s (with a cross-over) in a separate cabinet later for the bass..

So, my question is, does this seem like it will work? Do you foresee any issues with it? If this will work, it will save me having to buy a separate amp for the steel.

Any advice is appreciated, as always. Image

I have a friend using a BBE bass preamp for steel and it works well. I don't remember which model it is.

That should be a good starting point, Mike. You may find that the EQ on the bass head is not centered in the best places for your steel, but I often found when using my rack rig (with a parametric EQ) for bass that the eq curve that I preferred for the steel was very close to what I dialed in for the bass.

I've been playing around with an Alembic FX-1 pre amp for my steel rack. It's really designed and sold as a bass pre though so it should double pretty well.
