POD XT, Firmware Updates

Post by Jack Stoner »

There are new firmware updates and updates for the Line 6 Monkey and the Line 6 Edit.
DO NOT install the latest firmware, V 2.14. It will "trash" the POD XT for Steel Guitar. I installed it and lost all low end body - nothing but mids and highs and nothing I did would restore it. e.g. I primarily only use it for effects and apparently the basic EQ has been reworked. But, even using a preamp and speaker it still has lost all the lows.
Fortunately I was able to fall back to the 2.01 firmware which works well for Pedal Steel.

Also, they have a new version of the Line 6 Edit, V2.10 for Windows XP, however, it requires that the firmware be updated to the V2.14 that "trashes" the POD XT. Fortunately I still had the older V2.03 on my PC so I was also able to fall back on the Line 6 Edit also.

The new version of the Line 6 Monkey and USB drivers are OK.

You would think it ruin the low end body for
regular guitars also. So, why the heck would
they mess things up? The parametric EQ can't
compensate for this at all?

Jay, If you are just using effects and no amp model, etc there is no EQ to adjust. But, as mentioned I tried it with some of my steel guitar programs that have a preamp, with EQ, and a speaker and it's still about the same way. It's not as bad with the EQ but still not enough lows and body for steel.

Although I didn't try it, my Telecaster would probably sound OK with the new version.

Jack,

Thank you for the news. Like you, I like to stay current on software versions. Sounds like this time I will pass on the latest PODxt update.

I can't thank you enough.

Jack,
Even if you have no amp model selected, you still can use the 4-band parametric EQ when
you punch the "Edit" button. You have to make
sure it's switched on before hitting that button though, otherwise you won't hear any difference when making your adjustments.

With the latest update, I tried that and it kept telling me no amp selected. Must be one of the changes.

Jack I too downloaded that software & my tone is not very good. How did you go back to the old firmware or where can I find it?
Is it the flash memory on the line 6 website & if I reload it will the other upgrades work with it??

Jim, In the Line 6 monkey if you select the firmware, it should give you an option button on the right to Rollback. Click on that and then select the V2.01 for the flash memory.

Due to previous "surprises", I recommend you download ALL relevant files and keep them, just in case.

I wanted to download Jacks own settings
for the podXT but I never did download
the monkey to allow updates. Now I'm
glad I didn't.
The more I play my podXT the better
it sounds.

The updates aren't automatic or required. However the 2.01 firmware does quite a bit for the POD XT. If you don't have that one get it.

The "Line 6 Monkey" doesn't allow you to modify or upload/download programs. That is done with the Line 6 Edit Program. The Monkey program allows you to install the USB drivers, download programs such as the Line 6 Edit, firware, etc but it's all manual, no automatic updates.

This was written on the Line 6 forum when
someone complained about the crummy sound with
the 2.14 update:

Check the settings under "What are you Connected To" I think the update automatically sets this to something other than "Studio Direct".

Maybe this accounts for part of the problem?

I've been in contact with Line 6 support. He claims there wasn't "much" done in the update that could have affected tone.

In case I got a bad load, I went back this morning and reloaded the 2.14 firmware and it was back to no lows or body. I fell back to the 2.01 firmware again and the lows/body have been restored.

I've reported back to the Line 6 support and waiting on another reply. If there's some type of resolution from support, I'll post it.

There is no "what are you connected to", that I can find on the POD XT. That must be for a different model.

I was setting mine to studio direct & the tone was still flat. I went to 2.01 firmware
& the tone is much much improved.

Ps. My upgraded monkey & guitar port still work with 2.01

Jack,
If you press the "tuner" button, then turn the
"select" knob on the left side of the screen
until you see that "What are you Connected To"
page. It should preferrably be "studio direct".
I really don't know if this is the reason for
the tone change, but they did mention this on
the Line 6 Forum. I'm not gonna bother with
the update anyhow.

Jay, I'll try that, never knew that was there or is that something that was added with the 2.14 firmware?

UPDATE: Studio Direct is the default setting.

So, with Studio Direct and 2.14 it's still crappy.
[This message was edited by Jack Stoner on 15 May 2005 at 04:52 AM.]

I've found the fix for the 2.14 firmware update, thanx to Jay and working with the 2.14 updates.

The "Studio Direct" is the default EQ setting for the 2.01 firmware version but with the new 2.14 it is no longer the default, plus they have added an EQ setting that wasn't in the older firmware versions. The default with 2.14 is "Combo Front" and EQ, Low at 0 (no bass), Focus at 650 Hz and highs at 0.

Setting the What You are connecting to" to Studio Direct will give you what the 2.01 firmware had for overall EQ response. As noted by Jay, this is accessed from the "Tune/System" button and the "Select" knob.

I'll post this as a separate post, too as it could be lost since it's way down in the thread.
