Just got an old Profex
I don't mind the time and effort to manually program this rig, but I would like to backup the programming/presets. I think it can be done with the Midi interface, but I don't know much about Midi...I know PCs well, though.
So, can someone point me to information about how to accomplish this? I'd sure appreciate the help.

Mike...the way I've always backed up my ProFex 1 was by doing a sysex data dump into a midi sequencing program like Power Trax or Cakewalk. Do you have a way to imput and output midi on you computer?
If you have the more "steel standard" ProFex 2, you can save your patches on one of their memory cards. I'm sure theyre probably available somewhere. Ask Mike Brown.

So let me ask the question, What do you need in order to do a sysex data dump? I assume a midi port on the PC, a midi cable to the profex, and an established comm link. But, is there a separate application program associated with the sysex dump? Thanks for the info, I'm a Profex II novice at the moment, but havin' fun learnin'.

OK, my friends.... first off, I don't have a cache card...this is a version 1 (before memory cards) and secondly, what computer program (preferably freeware) do I use to do the sysex dump??? Will MIDI-OX work?? I don't want to have to spend $100+ just to do a backup...there must be some free pgm out there.
I've never worked with MIDI before, so I'm on unknown ground here. It may be duck-soup to some, but when you've never done it before, it's confusing. So, how 'bout a hand...in simple english, please.

Mike,
I don't know about MIDI-OX, but basically you need a program that will record MIDI data from the MIDI-in port on your PC and then play that data out on the MIDI-out port.
Essentially, you set the PC software (usually a MIDI sequencer program) to 'record' MIDI data and then start the sysex dump on the Profex.
When it's done, you stop the MIDI recorder / sequencer and save the file.
When it's time to load back, you put the Profex in sysex load mode, where it is waiting for sysex messages, and play back the MIDI file you saved earlier. Generally the external MIDI device (Profex) gives you some indication when the data has been loaded successfully and then you stop the MIDI sequencer/recorder.
I'm not sure about the Profex, but I seem to remember that some devices require a MIDI in and MIDI out cable be attached between the PC and the device simutaneously so that communication can flow both ways during the 'dump' and 'load' process. I've not done MIDI much in a few years, that may not be true in all cases.
I just looked up the MIDI-OX website and it appears to support send and transmit of sys-ex files. Go to the FAQ page on their website and look at this topic:
