Profex II, Newman Settings?
Well, I finally got a (used) Profex II with the Jeff Newman settings in it. The little thing is quite a package to figure out at first. The book makes for interesting reading.
Can anyone tell me what the "official" Newman presets are versus the experimental ones that may also have been tried/developed/modified in this unit?
Thanks for any help you can give & regards.

Just play through some of the presets on the unit you have. In my opinion, all the original "Newman" settings need some tweaking anyway. The ProFex and all devices like it, need to be used, tweaked, used some more, re-tweaked etc. until you really know what you are doing. I don't think I have ever used a factory or custom preset without customizing it for myself. You need to understand the gear you are using, although through my own experience, it can be a frustrating task. Just hang in there, it is a great piece of gear.

Thanks Dave. I've got another piece of gear, a Yamaha GEP50, that is setup in similar menu fashion, but, as far as I can tell, it only allows only one "effect" per preset instead of allowing a chain of effects to be created per preset. To use it I patched it into the DeltaFex II and used the DeltaFex for reverb and the GEP50 for Delay.
Now I'm looking forward to creating my own monster.
[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 29 April 2005 at 05:00 PM.]

Download the program list from my web site and you can use it to study the programming of each one of the Newman programs. It will help in understanding the unit. I made that when I first bought a Transtube Fex and it helped immensely to understand the programming concepts. I didn't use any of the Newman programs in the Transtube Fex as it has a different (additional) analog preamp section that the Profex II does not.
You will also notice, looking over the listing that there are duplicate programs and programs that are the same or almost the same with a different name in the Newman Program group. Also, that you'll end up only using a few programs - a main program and a couple others.
One note, since it was made with a Transtube Fex there are a couple slight differences in Parameter names. It's 99% correct for a Profex II.

Hi Jack
It was great for me too to get the original setup on the Profex II - I have been programmed in some of the sounds and mooved some of them to another place where I have gathered those I use - more easy when I'm on the road - I could'n remember how the original setup was.
Thankyou Jack

Some of the presets are darned close,
but a full understanding of the machine is essential.
I like Lloyd, 65 Emmons, Strat and Twin,
but I have teaked them a touch too.
I have a TubeFex and a TransFex stereo amp, and transfered the presets to the Transfex amp too.
But many of these presets were done by different players
in different amps and so,
while the reverb settings and basic tone is there,
your amp will likely NOT be the one it was developed on,
So play away and make the adjustments you like.
I have some set for an early effects grouping, then a splitter,
then 2 differing distortion sounds, 1 tube on trans, and effects going out each speaker of the Transfex stero amp.
A pretty cool sound to fade a pedal up into.
You can use the same with a stereo steel, I think, and certainly with multiple amps.
I suggest finnd sounds you DON'T like, and experimenting till you make one you do like.
Then when it comes time s to tweak a Newman preset you know what your about.
