1501-4 Speaker Basket

Post by Jim Bob Sedgwick »

Does anyone know where to obtain just the basket? Price, Etc. The cone ripped in my 24 year old BW after a 6 stringer decided to get so loud at a jam session he ran everyone out of the club. Thanks for any help.

Word to the wise.

The magnet slot is evidently smaller on the 24 year old magnet on the MarkIV 500 BW that I bought in 79 than on the magnets that will fit the newer baskets.

The Peavey shop here in Portland got a brand new basket and they put it on the old magnet, after I had already tried on with no luck. It rubbed immediately in any and all positions.

I'll repeat it because I know it's easy to misread these things:

I got a BRAND NEW basket from Peavey, took it AND my magnet to the Peavey Shop in Portland, and he couldn't find any way to install it so that it didn't rub.

I tried it first, making sure the slot was clean, which is was. Peavey was nice enough to exchange the basket I tried first with another new one, which I took unopened with my magnet to the PV Shop in Portland OR. Ther results are like I said. It still rubbed the coil in any position.

I can't get ANY information on the exact slot width specifications or their date of change from Mike, or anybody at Peavey, bless their hearts.

In the meantime, or should I decide to throw the dice and get a new magnet, before seeing in black and white, what the difference is in the slot specifications, I am using a K140 JBL that I really like.

I'd be interested to see what kind of luck you have.

Mike Brown? I think I may need help if Eric is correct (I am sure he is). Is it possible to replace the basket on the older models of the 1501-4?

I've had several baskets that did not fit also. Be really cautious when buying a basket, I would suggest buying only from a Peavey dealer so it can be returned if it doesn't work.

Since BW baskets and magnets are machined parts, the tolerances are tight(as they should be). Now, the original Spider/Peavey magnet that shipped in amps until about 1980 will not retrofit later baskets. The complete basket and magnet have to be changed out.

Really, the old Spider/Peavey gap spec is a moot point anyway as neither are available and the power handling has increased through the years. The Spider/Peavey magnet can be identified by its label that has the Spider/Peavey logo on it, but we rarely see any of them anymore.

As with any product, changes in specifications have to be made in order to improve the products from time to time.

In all honesty, I know that some of the baskets that we receive are purchased second hand and we do honor them if the problem is one that shouldn't have shipped from our factory. However, warranty guidelines have to be taken into consideration on a one on one basis and to be quite frank, we cover most at no charge.

My thanks to Mike. This is the first solid statement of their being a difference.

They were nice enough to credit me for the first basket I tried to make work, and damaged the windings after using it in the older basket.

I'll just wait til I break open another bale of $50 bills and get a magnet. Til then the JBL K140 handles the bass in my double amp system well when I use it.

Mine lasted 24 years, and as it was front loaded, and not clamped with a face plate, as those first ones were, it was only held by the glue into the basket. It held fine for 24 years and a thousand gigs or so. I have no complaints.

Peavey amps are number One.

So is Mike Brown.

Now about those log.... ( nevermind...)
