A preamplifier - modeler for a lap steel guitar

Post by Giorgio Robino »

Hi all, I'm an ambient-electronic music (slow-motion / deeplistenings music).

I'm happy playing the cheapest lap steel in the world (see the Artisan photo in my web site: http://solyaris.altervista.org)

Now,
I'm looking for a kind of preamplifier / amp modeler for my lap steel and a standard single coil electric guitar.

What I looking for is something "serious" for *clean* / sustained sounds (I mean no distotions / fuzz / fake effects for rokers)

Do you suggest something about ?

Many thanks for your feedbacks
all the best
giorgio

Btw, enjoy photos of my preferred lap steelers here: http://solyaris.altervista.org/fiends.htm

Bullish,
when a say "preamplifier / amplifier modeler" I mean a "professional" rack-mount or stomp box to insert between the guitar and the mixer (I'm already using a DI-box); I' do not mean an cheap amplifier Image and especially I do not mean any fake Boss/Roland gear Image

Try a Transtubefex loaded with Newman settings. Then you have a fine stereo headphone output, stereo balanced outputs for the mixer (with timbre/speaker modeling contol via a rotary switch) and tube emulation.

thank you Ken for your suggestion
but I didn't find any reference of Transtubefex on peavey.com.
Maybe the productis discontinued ?

So the reference here: http://www.steelguitar.com/others/pvamps/pvtranstubefex3d.html
seem brocken.

thank you anyway

What I've used for guitar and lap steel is a Carvin Qaud-X preamp. It has four channels with reverb, graphic EQ and a speaker simulator built in. For effects I have an ART Multiverb Alpha for reverb, delay and chorus, but any quality effects unit would do. It takes up three rack spaces and sounds awesome. They are no longer made but they show up on ebay all the time. It uses nine (9) 12AX7 tubes. My Rickenbacker 12 string sounds awesome through it especially through some good monitors.

I see, I see that many people are suggesting me the ADA MP-1 http://www.adadepot.com/ (maybe it's an update of what you said).

>For effects I have an ART Multiverb Alpha >for reverb, delay and chorus, but any >quality effects unit would do.

Interesting ... Image
my only multieffects is that one ... many people say bad about this ... anyway I used ART Multiverb Alpha for delays
on processing my Artisan lap steel; all the sound of "Western Detunes" ( http://solyaris.altervista.org ) come from ART!

take care

I've had my ART Alpha forever, I used to be a dealer. I think there are better units on the market, but I like the sounds I get and it's easy to set up and program. Besides using it in a guitar rig, I use it for PA on vocals and acoustic instruments.

The Carvin preamp is very different from the ADA. It's more "amp-like" for lack of a better term. It has a lot of features and has knobs that you can reach over and turn.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH FOR THE RIGHT RIG.

PODxt rules the earth. You tried one. Not saying they are the best or worst, just the highest profile device right now.

You might want to check out the Boss GT-8. It's got everything and sounds great. Two drawbacks: It's big and kind of pricey, but it beats the POD XT-Live hands down. I use it all the time for guitar and for steel when I'm playing a gig where I might get a lot of stage vibration and don't want to deal with the spring reverb in my N112 going nuts on me.

I see Paul: It seem taht www.Carvin.com is not more producing Carvin Qaud-X preamp; maybe replaced by SX300R that have features similar to that one you describe. I'll investigate.

To Bill & Bill:
yes, Line-6 PODxt and Boss GT-8 are very advertised gears ... but these are maybe nor perfectly suitable for me for some reason:

1. both are very very expensive in Italy and I don't think them woth the asked money; I'm look for something with professsional sound but I don't want to spent money for "beatiful toys (for teeen-agers)"

2. In general I hate the general-purpose all-in-one-for-rock-guitarist pedal/multieffects ...for example GT-8 contain COSM simulation technology of mythical out-of-production Roland GP-100 (mythical because used by my preferred ambient guitarist Jeff Pearce) BUT GT-8 leave out some subtle very interesting peculiar features of GP-100 (feedbacker, long delays, etc., )

Last but not least a very brutal Roland/Boss reseller rulesin Italy so thay not resell to a final shop if the shop do not buy at least 20 piece of a specific gear .... (this is for pedal for sure)
becuase that above myself and my trusted workshop of a maker of stringed instruments ( www.guitarland.it ) we decided to no more puchase Boss gear!

Btw, anyone have experience with tech21.com SansAmp technology ?

thank you to all
