Hilton Vol. Pedal

Post by Tommy Alexander »

I am looking for some imput on the Hilton Volume pedal. I haven't used one, nor seen one up close, but heard about it. I think that you have to plug it into a 110/120 volt outlet. Would like some comments.

The Hilton has been discussed extensively on the Electronics section. Go there and do a search. However, you won't find much negative about it, practically all positive.

I have one, and yes it does require AC power.

Hi Tommy, I got one about 6 mos ago; one of the best moves I ever made.

The height, action, taper, tone, solidity, looks - all top notch. IMO of highest priority, no change in tone from soft to loud.

I got a couple months ago.
The signal issues are good.
I like the parameter controls.

Two drawbacks:
A. The aluminum housing is so soft that you have to be careful and make sure (if you use the risers) that PLENTY of thread is inserted or the receiving threads will easilty strip.
B. The power supply is hard wired to the device and this is a major design flaw from my perspective after 20 yrs using a Morley Slimline photovoltaic. I'm wondering about finding some kind of in-line coupling that I can install to allow separating the power supply from the device for storage and transport.

Thanks guys for the imput and the positive response! Maybe the Hilton Company will see this and come up with a new idea. Marty may have stumled onto something!

According to Keith, the power supply is purposely "permanently" connected for several reasons. The first ones he built did have a connector for the power supply. But, people were losing the power supply, leaving it at "home" or leaving it at some gig, etc. Also, there were problems with people breaking the connectors, either the one on the power supply cable or the connector on the pedal. Permanently connecting the power transformer, although an inconvenience, eliminated several potential problems.

I've never seen anyone else complain about the threads or the case. This is the first time I've seen that. Actually, the only "complaint" I've seen before is the transformer connection, as a former amp tech I can attest to people breaking connectors and losing items.

I'll second the good words about the tone quality of the Hilton pedal.

But I'll also second the suggestion of having a power cord that can be disconnected. After three years of gigging and dragging my equipment around, the cable's insulation has cracked at the point where the cable enters the pedal.

I noticed this after the last time I shipped the pedal (using the original shipping carton), so maybe the shippers were extra rough with it.

I've never heard of any other Hilton pedals having this problem, so I don't want to scare anybody away from getting one. But I think that since this is a relatively new product, as time goes on, it's possible that others will have this same problem.

Tucker are you on the road using both of those licks I tought you or are you just moving around alot? Image

If the cord looks like it is separating from the connection point of entry to the pedal, unscrew the blace cord gripping nut, push the wire into the pedal a little and tighten the nut.

Nah, not touring those 2 licks, Larry... just had a few "fly-in" gigs where I had to get my beloved Hilton from here to there.

Once again, a Forumite steps up and saves the day with a great suggestion. Thanks Mr. Behm! Image
