Sustain units ?

Post by Wade Branch »

I cant seem to get my steel to really sustain past the 12th fret,Iam not really sure what a sustain unit does. Will one of these units help for my problem. Also do certain brand names of volume pedals help your over all sound or not ? Iam using a regular old ernie ball pedal but I notice most steel players are using Goodrich's .Is there a difference ?

Wade, before you decide, you should also consider a "Hilton" pedal, that contrary to your information, seems to be the most popular pedal today. They are all good units....the final decision is which one works best for you!

Wade,
I don't think a sustain unit will help. A volume pedal wouldn't make much difference with sustain either. I would check with Gary Carpenter. Take a lesson with him and bring your steel. It might be a technique issue. Gary lives right near you. Even if the problem is with your steel Gary can show you how to get the most out of it.

E me for his number if you don't have it.

Oh yea, I use a hilton pedal these days and I'm happy with it.

Need to know what guitar and amp you're using, and also your amp settings. I've seen players set the amp volume at 2-3, and then say "It's got no sustain".

Duh?

Bob gives good advice, a pro might be able to tell you if it's a technique problem, either in your hands, how you have the amp set, or a problem with the guitar.

and don't forget BAR techique , weight of the Bar, volume pedal technique and a powerfull amp..as Donny mentions, gain is not always for volume..but a few other oddities of requirement as well...

And while we are at it, how old are your strings ?

t

PS:You already have a sustain unit..

left hand, right hand, right foot..two ears...

I have the same one but forget to use it now and then !
[This message was edited by Tony Prior on 10 April 2005 at 03:42 AM.]
