hummmmmmmmmm

Post by George McLellan »

I was getting a loud hum in my NV112. I tried my Twin and got the same hum. It turned out to be the wall wart for my RV3. I tried a new one and end of hum. I guess they don't last forever.

The ONLY reason that manufacturers use wall warts is that they can get their product through UL much easier without an internal power supply, then they add a non-UL approved wall wart to the package and save lots of money. Of course, they pass a bit of that savings on to us, but we get what we pay for.

We did a sample testing of some wall warts a few years back, some of them put more dirt into the AC lines than a cheap lighting dimmer, others generate huge magnetic fields which our pickups love to snag out of the air for us. Very few are as good as they should be from a line noise standpoint.

They t mold the filter caps right inside. When the filter cap goes, it is non- repairable. When I was a low voltage tech, we used a 9 VDC, Rauland Borg wall wart on school intercoms for the push-to-call circuit. It fired an SCR and latched on the call light at the intercom console. After many years we would gets calls where every light was calling in! The filter cap had blown in the supply and the rippled DC was enough to fire every SCR in the call panel. Simple fix, we just strapped one on the leads off the wall wart.

I suspect your wall wart had a bad cap or none at all in it! A good 9VDC supply with filtering and decent voltage regulation cost a bit more, but is worth is for musical products.
