Black Box or Nashville 112

I'm playing my Zum thru a Vegas 400. If I pull the brightness button it's a little too shrill for me. With it in my highs are pretty clear but the mids are a little mushy. I can't decide between the Black Box and the amp. Opinions please? Not much more then $120 difference in the two. Thanks.

How are you setting the "paramid" (Mids) controls (the one with two knobs on one shaft)?

Like other Peavey amps, such as the Nashville 400, 1000, 112 the paramid is key to getting a decent sound. Generally, the frequency should be set to approx 800 Hz and then the Mid should be set somewhere on the minus side (I set mine at -3 on my 1000 and 112). If you have that at 0 or on the plus side it will tend to be bassy or "mushy".

When I first got my Nashville 400, I was in Herb Remington's shop in Houston. I told him I wasn't getting the bass response that I thought I should out of the Nashville. He said I should have got the Vegas 400. He said he liked it better and it was pretty much the same amp except in a larger cabinet. So, from that, it may not be the amp. I had a Nashville 112 and it wasn't for me although it was very good sounding, just not what I was looking for. Personally, I would try the black box first. Brad has a money back guarantee if not satisfied and it doesn't cost much to ship it. If you like the black box, you can always use it in the future with any amp that you might purchase.

I don't want to take sales away from Brad, but if the amp is not set properly, adding some other unit in the chain won't magically make it sound like you want.

You have to get the amp set correctly first.

I may have wasted every ones time with this. Some time lately I had unitentionaly changed the train I'm used to. I had the vp ahead of the DD-3, changing it back got my sound back. It made a small difference that was really bothering me. The steel and amp are both 1984s, and I've always like the sound. Still may try the Black Box.
