PV 15inch bass cabinet for steel?

Post by DJ Sillito »

I thought of changing to a pre-amp / power amp and cabinet combo. Came across a Peavey cabinet with 15 inch speaker (BW I presume) used as a bass set up. Besides the cabinet being a little larger in size and totally enclosed I figured it might work. Any thoughts on this. I haven't tried anything like this before I've always had a Nashville 400.
Thanks

A bass cabinet might be bigger and heavier than you need for steel. It might also have a stiffer cone, but that might still sound okay. Only listening will tell. One thing you probably don't want is the horn or tweeter in some bass cabinets. It could make your steel sound harsh and shrill. But you can always disconnect that.

Thanks David,
I'm sure it's void of horns...and yes the size I have thought of too. You mentioned the speaker having a stiffer cone which is something I didn't know..(not to up on the electronics side of things). I guess I'm fishin' for a reason why one wouldn't consider this type of set up. Thanks again

I don't know all the ins and outs, but an enclosed speaker will give you a much different sound than an open back, like the Nashville amps. Someone had a really good explaination in this section about a week ago. Do a search, someone was asking about using a NV400 for bass.

DJ, I have been using 15 inch speakers out of a peavey bass cabinet. I built 2 cabinets to put them in so I could spread them out and for the weight. I run a peavey m7000 power amp and profex 2. The speakers are closed back right now and seem to sound real good. I am thinking about trying open back and see what that sounds like.

I have a PV 1-15 cab with a 1501,I think,it is about the same size as the Sess400. I tried it as an extention speaker in my music room, did not like it at all.Could not get it bright enough.

Thanks for the replies. If I can get a hold of a power amp I'll can only try to see what it sounds like. I was trying to avoid purchasing a few more things just to try...I bet you can a relate.
