steelking vs peavey 112

Hey guys.I would like to get the fender steel king amp,,,but after reading the past month about the power/headroom issue,I am sort of backing away.Would the peavey 112/amp be a better choice?I,ve read where someone thought that putting a black widow in the fender would probaly help,,but why would I buy a new amp just to change out the speaker,,,when the speaker in there already should do the job??I played guitar thru one of those fender custom 115,s.It started to get all crappy sounding when turned up over 3 or so.As far as fenders and peaveys go,,I already have a room full of peaveys,so I was leaning toward the steelking.Anyway should I be concerned over the headroom/speaker issue ?Thomas Malugin Columbia,Tn CarterD10/SHO-BUD LDG/and already way to many amps.

What issues ?

I doubt you will find an amp anywhere that someone does not have a pro or con about..

The Steel King is a HI Powered amp..and is not in the same catagory of the 112..which is mild to moderate power.

2 different amps..2 different catagories..

One sells for $700 the other for about $450..

The Steel King would be comparable to the Nashville 1000 or 400 series.

IF you are not playing gigs of size a single 112 would be appropriate..if you are on gigs of size, large rooms, you may want to consider a more beastly amp...

I put a Nashville 112 through its paces last weekend.
I played in a large hall with a full band. I only had the gains turned to "6". I ran my steel through a Hilton pedal to the amp input and connected my Lexicon-110 effects unit to the pre EQ send/return.
The NV112 blew me away and great tone to boot. I have used a Nashville-400 for 20 years and had to move it with a small hand truck. I have decided that I will be using the NV112 from now on. AND this old man carried the 112 without a cart.

I Use My 112 Every Sat. Night At Our Gig I Set The Gain On 4 And It Has All The Power I Need In A Big building. Great amp. SONNY. Sho_Bud pro 111 & GFI.

I'll have to amen what Sonny and Mark said. The little Nash 112 has saved me a great deal of additional back pain while giving me all the power and tone i'll ever need doing my pickin gigs.

I have to go with Tony on this one....While I did not compare these amps in a gigging situation, I have a large "live" room in my studio, and played both amps side by side....

I was VERY impressed with what was comming out of the NV112 for it's size, weight, and only being a 1-12 amp...The tone was there, but the power that I am use to was not....Also the EQ was not as adjustable as on the Steel King, and I think the frequency shifts are different also ....You do have the price, and the weight, issue with the Steel King.... This is not to say that the NV112 is not a fine sounding amp, it really has a great tone, but I have to give the nod to the Steel King, and this is only because of my needs.....Your needs may be different from mine...

I uses a Peavey LTD with a 15 inch JBL for over 20 years on and off the road.After i quit the road i got a Bandit 112.Kept it a few months and then got the NV 112.I play fiddle also and bought a Carter SD-10 a year and a half ago.I do miss the C6th very much but the public and band leaders never liked it.LOL.Back to what i was going to say.Back in the early 60s i worked in a western swing band that had 10 pieces at times and all we had was 40 and 50 watt amps and played some very large places.But back in those days the bands went in for taste,not voluem.I know things have changed with the times but i can get all i want out of the NV 112.That amp honks and i used it one night in a band that had 2 fender rhythm players and one used a fuzz tone.You can imagine how noisy that was.I ran the volume on the NV 112 on 4 and turned it away from me as it was so loud if i was going to use it through a board at a rock concert,( which i woulden't) i would simply mike it.
Just my own personal opinion,and other musicians i know and have worked with who also go in for quality,not volume.Years ago there was a joke that went around that asked how to tell who the band leader was.Answer,the one with the largest amp.LOL

If you're worried about headroom, you should definitely worry MORE with the 112. It's a smaller power amp, smaller speaker, and the upside of that is a smaller package.

The SteelKing has a 15" speaker, which is significant for response on C6 playing especially. It also has a lot more wattage than the 112.

I have a Peavey Session 400 LTD that I like pretty well, but am planning on getting a SteelKing as an additional rig, just in case of a breakdown, or to have a second amp set up to rehearse at home at any time.

Bill Ferguson sounded great yesterday at the NW Georgia show through a PV 112 with NOTHING in front of it except a Carter and a volume pedal.

Thanks for the kind words.
I could not be any more pleased with the NV112.
I also used it Saturday OUTSIDE at a Y106 Remote Broadcast. Just me, my Carter & NV112. We DO NOT mic our amps and the NV112 was clear as a bell. I was even told I was TOO loud and no one ever told me that before.
Cleanest amp I have ever played.

Tim Hamilton also sounded great through his NV112 at the Georgia show. Other than a couple of rack units, every player there was using a Peavey amp of one model or another, and the 112 didn't take a back seat to any of them. That is, if you don't count the one that took the back seat of my SUV when I left! Just had to get one of 'em.

Here's a picture of me, my Carter and Nashville 112 playing an outside gig for Y106 Radio Station last Saturday.
We did not mic anything and I was actually told I was too loud.
This is one KILLER amp.
