I wanted to start a new thread on the POD XT, not to compare it to other modelling units but to discuss settings and stuff.

Currently I've got the "VIBE" setting to hi-cut -9dB. This seems to make it sound much more natural and not overly bright. Anyone tried this yet? Also the destination is set to 2-12"

My POD XT manual says for live performance run the POD directly into the guitar jack on the front of the amp. But some people are bypassing their amp's preamp and running POD into the power amp in jack. Has anyone compared these two mehtods to see what the difference is?

I'll just edit this post on what I am finding as I do it, I'll try the "vibe" but I've gotten the best "sound" out of the stock blackface and twin. It's so "Sho~Buddy".

Whem measuring any of them against a "bypass", they're a huge improvement.

I spent most of the night trying different things. I wish they had a single 15 cabinet model, and also that the mike being an on axis 57 with a 100% room is doing it. The twin 12 cab model seems to do it with my 4/500 combo.

As far as reverbs and effects, what I'm coming up with for "general playing is a digital echo, no feedback, 27%, and cavernous reverb set as desired. FOr a "stomp" I do the mystifying "L6 Compressor" and my favorite "effect" is the auto-pan with two amps.

More in a few minutes.

I had a hell of a time getting the USB thing "up and running" downloading the drivers, the flash memory, and 1.05 version. I've got two firewires, digicam, CDRW, and a bunch of USBs so it was damn hard finding a slot to put it in.

Also. I think recording from CW Sonar is going to be the thing. I had a "breakthrough" just before I canned it for the night(morning)

The biggest annoyance so far is keeping from getting my head torn off by those "big muff" channels when surfing around.

That. and half of those effects, amps and speakers needed thrown in the fire the day they came out of the factory...

More for sure.

Up.

I get a good strong signal into my Sonar, but it plays it back ONLY through my Pod. Strange. Also the wave form shows up as almost a flat line. WHen I save it to a wav or mp3 it won't play it back. Other wavs and Mp3s play through my Winamp player. ( PC)

BTW the playback through the Pod is AMAZING. SOunds better than when I played it.

I could play back a couple hours of noodling around and the little woman would think I'm down here not taking a nap

More to come, and I need more imput on USB recording to Sonar and/or Sound Forge is possible.

OK I had to kill the "windows has found a new USB devise" tag and let the Line 6 thingy do it. Now I'm getting closer. Now it gets into Cubase, Sonar, and Sound Forge, but still at what I think are lower levels. THe support guy is going to have a job tomorrow.

I'm going to find a couple other "amp models" tonite as well as fool with a couple effects.

THe Line 6 guy said going throgh all the models killing the Muff thingys is the only way to keep them from knocking your blocl off while surfing.

I'll post more of what I find tomorrow.

Current favorite for playing POD XT into my Session 400 or Fender Twin/BW amps.

Marshall JTM-45
Drive 9oclock
Bass - flat
Mid - boosted 2oclock
Treble - flat
Presence - 11oclock
Amp level - 90 percent
Vintage Plate reverb, longish
NO speaker model, NO AIR
Destination 2x12"
VIBE - Hi-cut -9db
Digital delay, feedback 25% or so, treble cut

This is a pretty warm and natural sound. The Marshall JTM-45 was originally Marshall's copy of the '59 Fender Bassman circuit so run clean it's kind of like a mellow Fender sound. If I brighten up the mids and treble and presence a bit, I can get a vintage Jimmy Day tone that's halfway decent.

It's been a real bitch getting the USB levels up to par.

The Techs didn't have a clue, and I finally found that the output knob turned as far down as possible allows a signal string enough to register, and record at a good level.

It about drive me nuts... (er..

I got a cool vintage Day tone with the Tweed Deluxe into a 4x12" 20-watt greenback cabinet. Pretty cool sound. Vintage plate 'verb.

I went back and turned off the "Vibe" setting from "-9db" to "off". I think that it's just too crispy and "icy" without the hi cut. It way mellows out the POD XT but seems to make it more natural and warm. I recommend trying this and then adjusting tone controls on both the POD and the amp to compensate. Let me know what you think of this.

I have very few if any complaints about the POD XT. I have a couple of gigs where I switch between steel and strat. I dont even have to get up out of my seat and I can get a world of decent sounds out of the rig. I currently am using the XT into either my Twin/BW or my Session 400. Stereo sounds great too.

David, I've got it going into a Session 400 or a Twin, both with guitar inputs only, no power amp input. If I had a Nashville or something like that I'd definitely try the power amp input, but PRE-EQ just to see, or post-eq while at it. I think you need the real amp's eq to tailor the tone. The POD eq is more for the amp model's voicing but when you hit the real amp, you'll need to control it's response.

I started with the bypass setting, as I use it in front of a Vibrosonic. That gives me a good staring point. I like 1) the Twin, 2) The acoustic (ACO), and 3) the tiny tweed is great for imitating straight swing steel.

OK, I'm back to using it with the "Vibe" turned off, no more -9db hi-cut. It helped warm up things when using my Twin which for some reason got kind of glassy and shrill with the PODxt. Now I'm using either a Session 400 or a Gretch Nashville amp and the PODxt sounds great thru both, vibe off.

Brad, are you using a Hilton Vol Pedal?

If so..I had to roll off some highs on the bottom of the pedal.
