George L cables

Post by Brandon Housewright »

I bought a George L cable to use from my steel to my volume pedal and I cannot get it to work. I've cut the cable flush and inserted it into the jack and also pulled the center portion of the cable out and that didn't work either. If someone can help me I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

There are times that it can be frustrating. Check to ensure that inside the plug is clean and free with no old cable remnants inside. You do not need to pull the center of the cable out. Clip it flush and stick the cable in the plug- I usually give it a bit of a turn as I'm doing it.

In addition to Jim's good advice, [it has to go all the way in and make contact with a pin in the center of the plug for +] the set screw has to be tight enough to break the outer insulation and make the ground.
But be careful not to tighten it enough to cut the center insulation on the center + lead and short it out.

I use a sharp utility knife to cut the cable. Also, cut the cable on a smooth hard surface as this will allow a clean cut.

I did not have positive results using side cutters or wire cutters as this squeezed and distorted the jacket of the cable.

I love my George L'S . Would'nt trade them . Try them you will like them . Just don't tighten the screw down to much and cut through it . Otherwise they are great . Gary .

I've used GeorgeL cables for a long time. The only thing I've noticed lately is that if the cable happens to move near the plug end I'll get some very loud noise (crackling, pops, etc.) through the amp. I guess there must be some movement of the center conductor and shield against those sharp metal points that make the contact inside the plug.

One note on George L cables: I got a few of those plastic colorful stress relief jackets they offer as freebies at last year's NAMM show, but for reasons I never quite discerned, more often than not the cable failed to work after adding the jacket. Same cord and plug, jacket off, back in business. Try again, cord now dead. I just gave up on them and threw the dang things away. I LOVE George L cords, so transparent.
