Guitar Tech Kit?

Post by Chris Schlotzhauer »

Is there such thing? Such as, a briefcase/workstation, light, tools, etc. I've seen them used by the pros. I'm looking for a starter kit of some sort as a gift to my son's band. They need to learn how to maintain their gear. They've been having too many mechanical breakdowns on stage. Any ideas? Thanks.

Chris,

I haven't seen one around for sale in the guitar stores, but I made my own kit. I took my Mom's old metal rollerskate case and used that. I have a #1 and #2 phillips and straight head screw driver along with some smaller "eye glass" screw drivers. I have a metric and standard allen key set. I have two small "mag lites". I have some ground lift adapters. A pair on neddle nose pliers and a regular set. Some spare 9V batteries and some spare mic clips. I also have a set of "nut drivers".

All this fits pretty nice and neat in the rollerskate case.

Cheers!
Mark

Oh yeah...one more thing...have them learn how to set the intonation on their guitars and how to adjust the string height properly. These are two "must knows" if you are going to be doing some gigging and don't have a tech that will be traveling with you.

Strings, pegwinder, picks, capo, gtr strap, wire clippers...
I also carry one of every cable used in the sound system and stage rigs: midi cable, speaker cable (1/4 to 1/4, speakon to speakon, speakon to 1/4) XLR, an amp A/C power cord.

Chris, the kit you are talking about is made by a company called Xcelite. They make great tools, but are a bit on the pricey side. You can get them from Mouser electronics.

You can also order a tool/briefcase with tool pallet from many online tool sellers like Harbor Freight, or pick something up at a Lowes or Home Depot store. Then just add your own tools.
