Pickups for a Super Pro ?

Post by Doug Jones »

I have recently gotten a really cool Sho-Bud Super-Pro. It came with Geo.L PF-1 pickups. They sound great at a low volume. I got this steel, however to play live and am curious on opinions as to which pickup sounds best on the Super-Pro at stage levels in a live application. Please share you opinions. I am leaning toward stock SB pickups or Tru-Tones. Whaddya think and what impedance? -DJ-

I had a Super Pro with aluminum necks that I put 18.5K True Tones on and it sounded fantastic.

In my Super Pro I've tried the 710, 610, 910, GL 10-1 and ended up with the stock pickups rewound by Jerry Wallace. Those sound the best to me. The George'l 10-1 and BL910 were ok as far as humbuckers go but Truetones worked the best for me at stage levels. I tried an 18K and a 17.5K in the E9. If I was still playing the Super Pro I would go a little hotter still.

Stock SB 1/4" magnet pickups either rewound by JW to 16k or less, OR he builds 1/4"ers. They come in white too. You've heard mine.

Hey Dougie,
How are you my friend? If you want a clean rich sound then BL910 is the answer, if you want a cleaner hot sound, then BL 710 is the answer, TJMHO.
Would like to see you one of these days and trade some licks my friend, when you comin up like you promised 15 years ago, hehe.

Eric posts 16K or less. Wow, that's down there. I believe the stock PUs are near 20K. I was thinking in the 18 range. Any more opinons?

DJ. I think my stockers were higher, but I don't know what the wire size/length was. As we all know, it's not just the "ohms". I tried the True Tone 3/8 magnets, wound to 17.5 and found that they were too dark, and it made my guitar sound like an . . .

Emmons...

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Iff'n you and Felix get that far after I get my Marrs, I've got two 1/4"mag SB style 16ks coming with it.

As an interesting twist I've had Jerry put longer magnets under the middle wound strings on each neck, graduated slightly from 1/8" down by 32nds. Kind of like they do on the old Les Pauls to make the signal more even.

I've always noticed that the smaller wound strings don't pick up as well as the .020 and .022 plains.

We'll see when it gets here.
