Bill, if your amp has pre-amp out and in jacks (I can't remember what the 400's have) you can use a line level direct box, which will have a 1/4" input, and both 1/4" and XLR outputs. Hook a cable from the pre-amp out to the 1/4" input on the D.I. You can then use a short cord to return the 1/4" out back to your preamp in jack. Some of the newer D.I.s have enhancement and speaker simulation circuitry. (Some folks don't like the sound of a D.I. compared to a miked amp). I will recommend that if you have to use a mic, don't just hang it over the front of the amp. That results in the mic diaphram being off-axis to the speaker and coloring the sound a good bit. All stage mics are designed to be pointed directly, or slightly angled to the speaker cone. Unfortunately it takes up another mic stand... I have an article on amp miking in the "John Hughey" issue of Pedal Steel.US magazine if you run across one. Hope this helps.
