My Musicman 65 (head)just came in today.Hooked it up to a 15" cab w/a JBL K 130,plugged it into my Fessenden SD10 and man that sounds good! Now I understand why alot of you guys use tube heads(Fender/Musicman) and JBL's.Big differance in the solid states I had before,I like it.By the way this Fessy I have too is awesome.-Thanks,Jim

Fender Super Twin Reverb, Super Twin, Dual Showman Reverb, 15" Eminence, two 15" JBLs in Marrs cabinets, Pro Reverb w/ 15" Jensen, Peavey Delta Blues w/ 15" Blue Marvel. Um...I think that about covers it. Image

When I ordered my Fender Twin Reverb in 1967, I ordered it with JBLs. That thing CAN honk!

Thanks for the replies.I'm really enjoying this sound. Is anyone familar with the MusicMan 65 amp(head)? Seems to have alot of punch for a all-tube 65 watt, plus the JBL in the cab doesn't hurt either.Any comments about this would be great.(settings,tubes,ect. ect.)-Thanks,Jim

Jim and Garth, the answer to both of your observations is that a good clean Fender tube amp has usable volume right up to the top, but few solid state amps do. So the wattage rating of the two types of amps does not give a good estimate of the usable maximum power. That Music man will sound good right up there on 10 with your volume pedal bumping the floor, but in my experience my NV 400 (which sounds great at low to moderate volumes) begins to sound crappy up in the top half of its volume range. This is true only for tube amps with clean headroom all the way to the top, which is the way Fender designed the silver face era amps. Black face Fenders are typically not clean all the way to the top, and many other tube amp makers design in early breakup to give 6-stringers the "crunch" and overdrive distortion they love these days (nothing wrong with that - I love it too for rock and blues).

Garth,- I too had a Nash. 400 prior to getting this Musicman (tube head).I never had a problem with it.They are great amps, but I love that tube sound. All my favorite steelers played through them. When Buddy Cage plays my area(Jerseyshore)and he's got them JBL's cranking out of his Fender Twin (head),it just sounds so good! I wish I had his connections with Dan Healy(Dead).I'd like to get a couple more JBL's from the Wall of Sound. Also,Rusty Young who just played my area with POCO,was using a Fender Twin.-Jim

My stepfather just got a Musicman combo of rather distinguished heritage. Next time I'm in his neck of the woods I'm looking forward to playing through it. He's pretty pleased with it.

When the time is right, I'll be back on the tubes I'm sure. Last night I heard Jon Rauhouse playing through a Fender Twin Custom 15 and he sounded great. Of course, Jon always sounds great so maybe it's not a fair test.

Mike Soldano, a Seattle amp builder justly famed for his high-gain rock guitar amplifiers apparently has a steel amp he's waiting for a chance to build. I'd love to try it, but a $2,000, 90-pound amp is a little too much for broke, lazy me.

THD also makes a 50-watt head that, if Dan Tyack's tone is any indication should be absolutely gorgeous for the steel.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to write "Worry less about gear and more about playing" on the blackboard two-hundred times.

The Music Man amps are hybrids, with a solid state preamp, and tubes in the power amp. I've got a 115RP, built in phase shifter, and 2 6l6's. Supposed to be 100 watts, but I don't know how they're gonna get a hundred watts out of a pair of 6L6's.
Still plenty loud, and sounds good, easy to dial in a good tone.
