Fender RI 65 super reverb

Post by Frode Bjoernstad »

Has anyone tried the 65 RI Fender super reverb for pedal steel guitar. It has 40watts, tube driven reverb and 4 jensen 10”.
I have been offered a trade for my seventies silverface deluxe reverb, and I guess I need a amp for my MSA semi classic and tele for gigs..
How is it compared to the 65ri twin reverb?
Frode

These are not "reissue" amps. They look like the old ones but the internals are totally different and therefore the sound will be different.

In as much as trading your amp for a RI Super, there are some RI Supers on Ebay for $679. You can always buy the RI amps, but your old original Fender will not be so easy to come by. My vote is to keep the old Fender and just buy a new amp.

I'm with you there Bill..The new Fender amps are very nice but they are a long way from the older PTP amps like your Deluxe
Reverb amp.I would also suggest keep it & try to go somewhere & try out the new amps.
They do sound different. Some folks like the new sound & some do not.You will not know for sure until you try them out IMHO..Ron

KEEP THE DELUXE!!
My butt will be sore till I'm in my grave from kicking myself for doing such things.
And in general, Super reverbs aren't too good for steel, unless they are loaded with JBL's. The JBL add a ton of headroom.
With the stock speakers, you'll notice breakup when you dont want it. (Unless you're playing blues & such, where you may want the breakup..)
Twins are better, and for around $700 (street price) you could get the new Steel King!!

You can simply modify that Deluxe to
stay a bit cleaner at a higher volume also.
I did it to my old blackface and it's easily
reversable!

I put and 12" EVM in my silverface deluxe. It gives me great overhead with beautiful uncolored tonal response. Keep it and get an additional amp. (I use it as the left side of a stereo rig when I need it.)

During my search for the right amp prior to constructing my VHT rig, I did in fact try a "reissue" Super. It sounded pretty incredible for six string, but did not have the headroom necessary for the steel in my opinion.

I prefer the sound of 12 inch speakers, and have a 1998 Deluxe Reverb "reissue" that I bring for low volume/small stage type gigs. I have to say that Super sounded incredible for guitar though, tons of rich bass and presence.

I had a blackface super reverb in the '70s. Not enough clean headroom for pedal steel, and the 10" speakers were too thin and shrill (fantastic for lead guitar though). I can't imagine that the reissue is any better for steel. On the other hand, I would also find the Deluxe Reverb lacking in clean overhead and power. But in general the silver face Fenders sound better to me than the reissues. In addition, they have more collector value, and are easier to modify.
[This message was edited by David Doggett on 21 September 2004 at 06:49 AM.]

I looked at the Super-Reverb amp. and the '65 RI Twin Reverb Custom™ 15” and the 2–12” and I chose the Custom™ 15”. One undesireable fact about the Super-Reverb was the Deeper Cabinet which made it rather bulky with all that weight! I was actually looking for the Custom™ 15” in the first place and didn't change my mind after comparison. I'm convinced that I made the right choice for myself! But I no longer play PSG, only Non-Pedal. I have no problem with lows, even though I do use a .070w-Low (A)

I have a real deal 65 Super Reverb.I'm using a 1501 SB Black Widow, in a 115 Peavey cabinet.I would not have enough headroom on a gig.But here at the house it kills.I had forgotten how good these amps could sound with a good speaker.
I remember using one of these amps as kid.I had a D-130 JBL in it.I switched to a 77 Peavey Session 400,A very good amp BTW. However it took some getting used to the Peavey. It didn't sound as sweet. But I stayed with it for the head room and besides Buddy was using one so I knew it had to be better. Image
I've often wondered about my sound in the early years. But thinking back I was playing a 67 bolt on Emmons PP and the blackface Super with a 15 inch JBL.Guess I had pretty good gear after all.I guess my hands just got better.Or not. Image...........bb

It's a personal choice, Frode. The value of the RI will continue to go down, while the value of the SF will continually go up. As with automobiles, "new and shiny" usually means "you're going to lose money".

Either the RI Super-Reverb, or the SF Deluxe-Reverb will be rather puny when compared to a Twin-Reverb, RI or not. However, a RI Twin will also lose value, and the SF and BF Twins will only go up.

I vote for the "oldies" as long as their price is close to a new RI model.

Maybe I'm just foolish, but; I never bought anything, (Steel, Amp., or Automobile) with ‘Re-Sale Value’ in mind! I buy for the use that I can get out of it now! I don't buy thinking that next year I won't like it and I'll buy something else. I never consider my purchases to be temporary! It may not be the wisest thing to do, but; that's just the way I am.
