Recomendations Please: SMALL PS Amp

Post by Peter Goeden »

I live on a boat and have no room for a big amp. I would love some suggestions re quality PSG-compatable amps that measure ~1- 1.5 sq ft. Does size necessarily limit quality?

...and how about TWO tiny amps vs. one small one?

Evans AE100. I have one and it sounds terrific - hard to believe it is all coming through an 8" speaker.

AER Compact 60 - it's excellent for practice, and can be pressed in to service for a gig if you have a good PA to plug it into. Primarily an acoustic guitar amp but works with E9 very well due to the clean output. Verbs are digital, but not bad.
Drawback - initial cost. I paid about $750 new. Well worth the price to me because I also play acoustic guitar and lap. Good for lap steel hawaiian style and is all I ever use with my Stringmaster on gigs. I believe it fits you 1.5 sqft. limit

PEAVEY NASHVILLE 112! Without a doubt. I've not been sorry I bought mine. Greatest small steel amp I've ever played through.

Peter, I have an evans Fet 500 LV with a 12" speaker for sale. $475.00 + shipping
It is the same size as a Nashville 112 but has 200 watts. It is heavier than a Nashville 112. It is 51 pounds, but sure does sound good! It has the tooled western vinyl, and is in excellent condition.

If space is at a premium and you have a stereo to listen to music with, get a Line6 POD or POD/XT and run it into the stereo. You will be pleased at what you hear.

Karlis, I guess the sound from this set-up would be pretty thin, eh?

Peter, If you can borrow a POD and hook it up to your stereo, you may be pleasantly surprised. I sometimes run my POD directly into a 10 watt Radio Shack amp and out to a pair of Speakerlab speakers. The sound is limited by the quality of your stereo speakers. If playing CD's sounds good to you, your steel will probably sound good as well.

My manouche group does some playing regularly where there is no electricity.

I wanted a upright bass helper amp for those gigs and general busking purposes.

I just got a CRATE TX50 Bass Bus amp.
It has very good 4 band & contour EQ, 50 watts, a multi effects unit and is quite surprisingly light.
It even has a stand mount built in.

Well of course I had to try the Sho-Bud through it.
I was very pleased with the sound and the volume level.
I could play vs several amped acoustic guitarists, in C6 only and fit right in.

It has a car lighter cable and the normal wall socket charger.
The critter will run all day on a charge.

It is also significantly cheaper here than the AER, which are great amps.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 23 July 2004 at 03:36 PM.]
