Cure for speaker impedence problems

Post by Jack Francis »

I have an old Black Face Super Reverb that was made into a "Head" before I got it...I lent it to my son and he has been doing his Van Halen thing with an ADA MP1, into the amp, going into a Theil speaker cab with a single 8ohm Celestion speaker.

I have been thinking about a 4-10" cab to get the 2ohms that it wants to see and then thought, why not try and find a 2ohm 12" speaker?

I called Ted Weber of Weber Speaker Co. and asked him about one and he told me about an answer to my problem that is even better.

Next week he will start selling a new product that will be a help to ALL of us. An impedence matching transformer that we can put in our amp cabs and dial in what ever we need for whatever speaker configuration we want to run. It will cost about $30-$40 he thinks....sounds like a great idea to me.
[This message was edited by Jack Francis on 20 July 2004 at 01:05 PM.]

One word of caution. Unless, the matching transformer has absolutely flat frequency response, you will not get everything you get at the speaker jack.

This trait of transformers has plagued auio engineers since day one. They are notorious for changing or taking away from the fidelity of music. This is the main reason why transistor amps were a blessing in this regard, since most do not use them.

Now I am not saying that a player will hear any difference. And if this is the case, great. But see if you can get a refund if you are not satisfied, since again audio output (particularly matching) transformers have not often left happy campers in any electronic medium they are used in.

Good luck, and may Jesus bless you in your quests,
