I'm new to steel and was wondering about effects pedals. Are they essential to get the typical pedal steel sound? I've heard reverb and compression pedals are important. Should I buy them? Thanks.

Reverb, if your amp doesn't already have it, is the only thing I would consider essential to "complete" your sound. The rest is add-on. Of course some people have developed their sound and would consider other components essential parts of that. Delay is good. Conpression is good. But these are above and beyond what I would "not leave home without".

I would purchase a Boss DD-3 (or DD-5) and turn the reverb on your amp off.
But then you are not me. There is one thing for sure,
"if you got tha money hunny, they got every conceivable thing since time!"
