Mesa Boogie Pre ?

Post by Steven Welborn »

Im trying to decide between an Alembic or Mesa Boogie tube preamp. Couple questions tho: Is the M.B. studio pre one OR two rack space?
Arent BOTH the units modeled after fender blackface circuitry?

Anybody favor one over the other?

Thanks!

Studio Pre it is a 2 space. I'm sold on the
Mesa.
[This message was edited by Chuck McGill on 10 May 2004 at 04:34 AM.]

The MBSP is more versatile but don't count out the Alembic. If you run channel A into B and then out, you get twice the adjustment possibilities.

Running A into B on the Alembic was for getting distortion or "edgy" rock tones. Does not work very well in my opinion as the unit is just too clean and powerful.
The F2B Alembic is the best preamp as far as I am concerned.

I have and love the Mesa Studio Pre. Also, I have built a rack rig with the Mesa Formula Pre (they do not make either one anymore) and love it as well. The Formula has no reverb but the overdrive is superior IMHO, plus it's only 1 rack space.

Bill you are correct about the possible overdriven sound, but by monitoring the levels I never had that problem. I can drive the hell out of my system if I want to or need to, but the F2b can handle it all.
