Best sounding steel guitar amp?

Post by Terry Sneed »

I know everbody has their own opinion, but if you had to pick one amp for your steel, what would it be? I've never used anything but the session 400'rd, and I love the sound I get, but what would be your pick? thanks

Sorry, I didn't see the post below on "best steel amp ever made" till I had already posted this one.
can I ask, what the difference is in a session 400 and session 500'rd?
and what makes the Evans, or webb so popular?
I've had my session 400'rd for probly close to 20yrs, so I might be in the market for a new amp before long. and I want one that sounds close to, or better (if possible) Imagethan my session 400'rd. Image

Terry, I've had 400s but the most incredible sound came from my 500 but it's too meaty to tote. I bought a new two piece Webb 614 with a JBL and it is even better and my wife doesn't get a hernia loading it. I can see why the Opry has these all over the stage for the steel players, thanks to Tommy. Nuff said.

Thanks Gary. I'll have to check on the Webb amps at our local music store.
sounds like somethin I'd like, since I've had back surgery, and still have the same back problems.

Peavey? A Stereo Chorus 212 (w/LeMay mod)

Fender? A Twin Reverb, or a Super Twin Reverb.

Terry, sadly to say, I doubt the local music store has a Webb since they are purchased through the Webb company direct. Mr Webb is very ill at the moment but I'm sure his people can handle your order. These are not cheap amps but quality hand built precision amps that have proved themselves since the 70s and they have the best tone options at the flip of a switch.

I'll probly go with a peavey, or fender.

Hello Terry,
I've been following your post on a daily basis just to read the responses.

Well, since you are in the market for a good steel amp, I thought that I might lend an opinion and add facts.

As you know, we now offer the Nashville 1000 and Nashville 112 models. The Peavey models offer clean output power, a preamp that can be adjusted to obtain almost every tone that you could imagine and customer service after the sale. I am on this forum daily, whereas our competitors aren't. Our company can be reached toll free at 1-877-732-8391 in North America and we offer every product in the musical signal chain.

If you attend the two largest steel shows in the world, ie; Scotty's and Texas shows, you will find a stageful of Peavey products as Peavey Electronics and our authorized dealers sponsor both of these events. And last but by no means the least, our products are covered by our 5 year limited warranty. I personally attend the two shows listed above, as well as others and will be glad to discuss our products with you should you call the factory or visit with us at these shows. I can be reached at the above phone number.

Thanks a bunch Mike. is it possible that you could snail-mail me a brochure of all your amps, along with a price list? or, are all your amps listed with prices on your website?
if they are, then that would be just as good.

TERRY, I've used a LTD 400 for years, then used a Nashville 1000, but now the Nashville 112 is my chose. It's affordable and easy on the back. I use 2 of them with an alesis midiverb for a great sound. LA

Thanks larry. the nashville 112 is definately more within my price range.
does it have just one 12" speaker?
if so, how does that 12" compare to the 15" black widow in my session 400'rd?
I need another amp, that I can leave at my church, so I won't have to haul this session 400 back and forth ever week. it's killin my back. Image

My 112 will play as loud as I can stand to hear it in my house. It doesn't have the same low end as the bigger 200 watt amps, but for an 80 watt amp and a 12" inch speaker, it's very good. Peavey did a good job on the amp and it's what I use for my home recording. The preamp in it is wonderful.

As for my favorite amp, my (pre-1980) Webb 6-14E is my favorite, followed by my Nashville 112.

Terry, the 112 has a 12 inch spkr and I prefer the sound of it over my 1000. Get the technical poop from Mike Brown. LA

Terry, for what is worth, I am the one who sold the Webb 614-E on here recently. If you are wandering what I am now playing, it is the Nashville 400 with the module kit already built in from Peavey. We all have our personal tastes when it come to sound. However, I feel more at home with my Nashville than the Webb. Although Webb is a wonderful sounding amp! I was also playing thru an Evans FET 500 prior to the Webb, also a fine amp! But, with the amount of customer service from Mike Brown and Peavey as well as the fact that Peavey is very well constructed, I again am at home with Peavey. I played thru a Nashville for a number of years without the mod installed and tried the Evans and the Webb. As I already stated, I am back home with the Nashville! The mod does make a difference.
Just my opinion.
