Jimmy Day's pickups

Post by Mark Herrick »

Anyone know what type of pickups Jimmy Day was using in his Mullen and what resistance value they were wound to?

I have a Mullen SD-10 that I am thinking of trying a different pickup in. The original Mullen pickup (single coil) is showing a DC resistance of 25.1K. That seems kind of high to me. The guitar doesn't sound bad, but I think the high end is a little weak.

My Emmons P/P pickups (single coil) read 18.2K and it sounds sweet!

(Mullen owners encouraged to reply!)

Hey Mark! The pickup on my Mullen U-12 measures at 30,000 ohms. I asked Del if this was correct and he assured me that it was. How old is your guitar? Del and Dixie have changed their pickups a little bit lately. You might want to contact them and find out more about them.

I'm pretty sure he used the George L's 10-1 pickups. Humbuckers.

Hi Lee,

I bought the guitar used in '97 or '98 and was told that it was only 13 months old at the time, so it has to be a '96 or '97 model.

I've heard that the Lawrence 910's are nice.

You might want to contact Del. They have tried quite a few pickups on their guitars. Del can tell you which ones are compatible with their instruments.

I heard that Mr. Day used 10-1's too. Just one more example of "it's all in the hands..."

A couple of years ago at the Dallas show Del showed me a pickup that was in the 26K range, sounded like an 17.5 to me.

The p/u's in my '03 Mullen read : E-9= 22.4K
and C-6= 22.6K. I've been told that the BL LXR16 are a very good p/u for what i'm looking for but i called Del and asked him to wind me some p/u's that aren't as thin on the high end before i spend $$. The smaller strings on the E9 will peel paint off the wall, so to speak. The strings from 5 thru 10 sound great though with the stock p/u's. But it's the 1st thru 3rd strings that bite.
