JBL K-130 8 in a Webb

In my Webb 6-14E I swapped the E -130 4 for the K-130 8 and I think I like it better. It warmer sounding without the harsh upper mids. It's also noticably lighter which is a BIG plus. I'll know for sure after I use it on the bandstand this Saturday. Am I less likely to blow the speaker since the ohms don't match? What are your experiances with this set up for those that use it? I rarely play with the volume past 3-4.

Hey Dave, Ive been noticing how extremely midrangy and at times a bit harsh my Webb/E130 sounds myself. Im very interrested in the results with your K130 saturday. I understand the K130 is basically a remake of the D130, which I've heard were less harsh. Has anybody had positve results swaping out there E130 with anything else in there Webb?

I have a new Webb 6-14E with an 8 ohm E130 in it. I also have a like new 8 ohm K130 that I could install in the Webb. Like you, I do not play at high volume levels. I play with sensitivity all the way open and volume set at 3. Please let us know how it goes this weekend. Based on your input, I may opt to swap the K130 into the Webb.

I also swapped out the E-130's in my Webbs
to get rid of the pronounced upper mids.
I stuck in some older EVM 15L speakers.
What a difference! Much smoother with
excellent high end & better lows than the
E-130's.

The K-130 has an alnico magnet like the D-130. Sweeter and smoother sound than the E series ceramic magnets, and much lighter. The 8 ohm load will bring the amp's power down to around 160 watts, still enough to blow the K-130, but really you should be fine unless you just blast it with low C6 stuff. The JBL's are loud and efficient speakers so you should have plenty of volume before getting into the danger zone.

Thanks for the input Brad. I play E9th on an SD10 so no C6 lows to worry about. I think I'll give it a try. Lighter weight would be a nice bonus!

My late 70's Webb amp has it's original K-130 JBL, but after blowing the cone with too much sudden fuzztone, had it reconed at 8 ohms instead of 4, no problems, same great, smooth tone, just slightly less power. But like others here, I have sensitivity all the way up, and volume at about 2 and it's LOUD...BUT SWEET!

Howdy Brad Sarno, sorry I didn't get the chance to try out your Black Box in Dallas, too much to do! I even missed Brumley's set, dang it. Was it well-received?

Yes, with 8 ohms it's still plenty loud on 2.

I prefered the K over the E but the band I play with is so friggin' loud that I think the E would have worked better at my gig last Saturday. I'm playing this Saturday with a quieter country band and will give it another try. I'll post my results.

Well, I took the Webb with the K-130 out on a few more gigs, plus the steel guitar jam last weekend and the results are in. The K stays and the E goes in a box as a back up. I prefer the K. It's smoother, warmer and lighter, and now the Webb works well for regular guitar as well, so no more hauling around two amps. Even with the mismatched ohms it has plenty of power. I use the low input with the sensitvity on 10, the volume on 2 and it keeps up just fine.

Thanks for posting the results Dave. Im going to swap out my E130 also but need to decide betwwen a K130 or a EV 15L. Anyone know their pricing? How about tone differences... or is this splitting hairs?

I also swapped out the E130 8 ohm speaker and installed a K130 8 ohm speaker in my Webb and have taken it out on a few jobs.
While I clearly liked the lighter weight, the K seems to lack the punch and definition of the E. I'm going back to the E130 and I think I'm going to try one of Brad Sarno's Black Boxes to see if I can satisfy my endless pursuit of tonal Nirvana.
