sturdy grill cloth?

Post by Jackie Anderson »

What is a good sturdy choice (and source) of grille cloth that offers real protection to a 15" speaker, without going all the way to wire mesh?
[This message was edited by Jack Anderson on 07 April 2004 at 04:56 PM.]

Jack, I looked at some black mesh material that they had at my local Lowes Building Supply some time ago. It was in a roll for about $10.00. It was for making pet enclosures. I didn't buy a roll, but it looked like it would make a great, tough, grill covering for an amp.

That sounds like a good, industrial-strength idea. I'll go look at it. However, there must be some real grille cloths that are sufficiently tough. They are easy to find on the web -- I just don't want to order something and find out it's on the weak side.

The older Peavey Black was the same as the Fender Oxblood, good toough cloth. The original style Peavey black is the same as the Fender black, check Mojotone.com. I would use some expanded metal or wire mesh and then cover with a nice grill cloth, no one would know it was even back there!

If you have a rear mounted speaker, you could pull the speaker and put wire mesh down over the speaker studs and then reinstall the speaker. That way you could just leave the original cloth alone. Putting grill cloth on is an art all in it's own, so it might be best to leave what is there in place. I am still trying to get better at installing grill cloth!
