Best tube upgrade for Peavey Classic 50

Post by Steven Welborn »

Ive been noticing some harsh harmonics in my Classic 50/212 lately. Maybe it's a good time to upgrade the stock tubes which are currently three ElectroHarmonics 12ax7's and four Sovtec EL84's.
I searched for options so far:
Preamp: Tesla/JJ for the 12ax7's ?

Poweramp for EL84's:
1. EI Elite
2. Russian EL84 M(military)
3. JJ
Also a dumb question: How do i make sure bias is correct? thanks

Steve,
I have a Classic 50/50 head. I retubed with: Sovtek 12AX7LPS and Tesla JJ EL 84. I got them from thetubestore.com Tell them which amp you have. They will match the sets. I think the bias is factory set? And not adjustable. These new tubes were a definite upgrade.

The bias is fixed in this model. We also sell the stock tubes should you wish to replace them to factory specs. You can reach our parts personnel at 1-877-732-8391 from 8am to 5pm CST Monday through Friday.

I retubed mine with matched JJ Tesla and was very happy. I'm having a brain cramp and can't rembember the name of the place I used but he had excellent service. One of the tubes blew when I turned on the amp. He overnited a replacement free. I replaced the stock speakers with Reverends at the same time. I use this amp for six string and it rocks! BTW.. I used this last week at practice for my steel and it really sounded great.

Yay! I remember. It was this fella.

I emailed him and explained that I wanted a very clean tube sound. He hooked me up. These come in different ratings for different type styles.

I have a quick question for Mike: I have a Triumph 60. Is the bias fixed in this also?
