Tube preamp for Vegas 400?
The advert material says a tube preamp with 12AX7 tubes will "warm" the sound from the instrument. Does anyone know if it works as advertised? My regular amp is a Peavy Vegas 400. Thanks

Chuck,
Adding a tube pre in front of any solid state amp is almost always a good idea in my opinion. There are several models and makes to choose from. The down side is another piece of gear to manage. I have had sucsess with Mesa-Boogies'. Their studio pre is a two space unit with tons of eq control, FX loop, channel switching and more. Cost is right around $250-300 used. If you get one, make sure it has relativly new tubes. Another word of advise. Do not chain anything in front of the input to the pre-amp. Go direct from your instrument (vol. ped.) to your pre-amp input. Then loop out for FX and ?. Also, bypass the pre-amp stage of a solid state amp. Go from the output of the tube pre-amp into the amp-in stage of the amp. This will avoid dbl preamping and will result in a cleaner signal.
