polytone anyone?

Quick question...do any of you play through a polytone amp? i have been a peavey player for years but am thinking about switching.

Why? Polytone was never built for steel and i dont
like the way they sound for steel anyway. The
big Line 6 flagship Vega head sound great even thier flextone 3 sounds better. The new NV112 sounds great, the Mesa preamp sounds great. I would reconsider a polytone the one I had Hisssssssed
its way into obscurity.

Long ago I got a Polytone-- the small 12" one with reverb. Was a nice small amp to carry around. Sorry to say I got it before they put in a universal power supply, so I had the internals changed to 240 when I moved to NZ. As of late it developed a bad hum at times which I've traced to the reverb unit, but just haven't bothered to get it fixed sinve I'm not playing much with it these days.
Mostly use my Nashville 400.

JIM, THANKS FOR THE LINK. I DID DO A SEARCH, BUT THAT ONE DID NOT PULL UP. SORRY BOB ABOUT POSTING IN THE WRONG AREA. I WORK WITH A FIDDLE PLAYER THAT USES A POLYTONE. I CURRENTLY USE A NASHVILLE 1000, BUT WOULD LIKE SOMETHING SMALLER AND LIGHTER TO CARRY. I THINK HIS MINI BRUTE IS 175 WATTS VS. 200 WATTS ON THE NASH.

Hmmm... that's odd, Baxter. Here's what I did. I knew I had posted on the subject before in the past, so I went to Search and searched on keyword: polytone in the Electronics sub-forum, and listed my name Jim Cohen as a poster, and got back 5 thread listings. Try it and see...

Baxter, I thought the Mini Brutes were only about 125 watts. I have a Mini 15SL that sounds pretty good but the power rating on it is only around 125 watts at 2 ohms, but since a 2 ohm speaker is unheard of, with a 4 ohm speaker, it only puts out about 65 or 70 watts. To get the full output power you have to use a 4 ohm extension speaker.

Mine developed some distortion a few months ago and it was almost impossible to find someone to work on it. I finally had to ship it to Dallas, and the bill with shipping was over $250.00. I now have around $500.00 in a $200.00 amp. The most I ever paid to have a Peavey amp repaired was around $100.00, usually it is much less than that. I would definitely look at the Nashville 112 for a lighter amp. I will have one of these in my collection before long.

THANKS DARVIN...THAT'S JUST THE RESPONSE I WAS LOOKING FOR. I AM A FAITHFULL PEAVEY USER; BUT THROUGH THE LAWS OF PHYSICS, OR MOTHER NATURE, OR BOTH, MY 1000 JUST KEEPS GETTING HEAVIER! PLUS THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH ROOM IN THE TRUCK OF A MERCURY SABLE. I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT POLYTONES OTHER THAN THEY ARE LIGHTWEIGHT, AND JAZZ GUITARS AND FIDDLES SOUND REALLY GOOD THROUGH THEM.

Guys,
WHY the constant inquiries, are brand X, etc. amps better for Steel Guitar, bla bla bla. PEAVEY, Webb, Evans,Standel, and Stereo Steel etal. are specialized STEEL GUITAR AMPLIFIERS and cover the whole gamut voicing and price wise, from about $300 to $3000. There are always queries about what about so and so amp for Steel Guitar. The above mentioned amps are specific STEEL GUITAR AMPS and have been used by TOP professionals for decades. I realize that there are more expensive amps available, but they are not STEEL GUITAR AMPS and most of them don't even come close. I know some of you think if it costs more, it's better, I disagree. If the above amps do not comply with your needs there is a problem some where.

Darvin, I certainly did'nt mean to make lite of your bad luck with your amp. I hope you did'nt take it that way. After doing a search on all the threads about the peavey 112, I think I'll give one a try. Thanks again to all who responded.

Hey Baxter, I took no offense at your remarks, I make light of these kind of deals myself, (crying sure doesn't help any-LOL. If I ever make any money on a musical equipment deal, you can bet I'm going to lose it on some other deal. Thats just part of the game when you are always chasing "that sound".
