Requesting Amp Advice

Post by Jim Simon »

Currently have rack setup with ProFex II, DPC 750, Furman Power Conditioner and Rack mount Korg tuner. Requesting advice. Go with Webb 614 E or stay with rack setup. If advice is to stay with rack rig, what speaker cabs? Thanks for the help.

If you dump the rack gear you might loose money, you have quality gear. You may have to try different speakers to suit your taste. If you find a Webb amp buy it, make the decision about the rest of the gear at that time.

I'll go along with Larry. I like a rack setup myself. Much more variety in choices. I would recommend a couple of Peavey 15" black widows, I think the number is 1501 and find someone to make you some enclosures and you should be pretty much set. If you have room in your rack you could try and pick up a used Peavey Tube Sweetener. This could fatten up your tone some.

For a quick gig I like an amp purely because it's simple but if I can, I prefer a rack set-up. You've got so much more variety and if it's a stereo rig you can spread the speakers and the sound is much much wider and fatter. You can't beat a stereo sound with separation. I use some BW's with open back cabs.
Before this rig I used a pair of Session 400's set up for a Profex-II and an 882 Sonic Maximizer going straight to the power amps. A really good and fat sound and you can use the amps by themselves if you want. Keep the rack!
[This message was edited by Frank Parish on 15 February 2004 at 01:22 PM.]

Thanks guys for the advice. I'll start looking for some BW open backs to complete my array. Thanks again.

Jim,
Years ago, Peavey put out speaker cabinets with 15" Black Widows in them but then discontinued them. I suppose not enough call for them. I missed out on the Peavey cabinets but I did order a pair of 15" Black Widows and had someone make a pair of cabinets for them. Cush-Case used to make cabinets, rack units and guitar cases but I don't think they are in business anymore. Post a message in buy and sell and I'm sure somebody can put you in touch with the right party. I use a rack unit with the two speakers and really like it!
