Class 2 transformer ( wal-wart ) ?

Post by Andy Schick »

I need to replace a Class 2 transformer.
Its output is 9 vac 500 mA

My question,
I can find a 9 vac 800mA,
and the saleperson told me 800 mA is fine as the unit will only draw what it needs.
Is this true or will hurt my unit?
Thanks Andy

Brad speaks the truth.

and since it's AC you don't have to be concerned about polarity.

The posters are correct. Think of this, your wife sends you to the store for a quart of milk. You discover they only have a half gallon. Will that do?

Thanks for all the replies.

One more question if my input 120vac has a voltage drop of say 8vac therefore out at the outlet is 112vac. Will this effect the performance of the output 9vac of the wal- wart?
Thanks again.

Yes. It will probably still work. A 10% tolerance is normal.
