Tuner recommendation...

Post by Gary Mortensen »

Friends -

I'm looking to upgrade to a "better" tuner for use with PS, guitars, Dobros, etc.

The two I'm looking at are the Boss TU-15 and the Seiko ST1100. Does anyone have experience with either of these, or a recommendation of something else? I'd rather not spend more than $100...

Thanks,

Gary,
Texas

I don't know about the Seiko, but I have a Boss TU-12. (Is that an earlier model of the TU-15?)

The Boss is great, and, unlike cheesier tuners I've had in the past, it's been very reliable for many years.

The only thing that has gone wrong with it was that I once had to resolder a wire to the input jack, after noticing that the needle's behavior had become erratic. Maybe I allowed the jack to become loose, I don't remember. I've also had to duct tape the hinge on the case.

Many people use the Boss.

The Boss TU 15 is a very good tuner. I like the needle, and have no complaints. Pedal steel is demanding on tuners, because of the low strings, especially C6 or universals. The tuner in my POD XT was not stable enough to use on the lower strings. But the Boss handles them fine. Don't know anything about the Seiko.

Kick up another $60 or so for a Peterson VS-II....you'd never regret it.

amen on the Peterson tuners. VS1, VSII..

I play and tweak-on lots of stringed instruments. Dobros, T8 Fender, regular guitar, SU12 psg.

I find The Peterson especially helpful on setup and intonation of 6 string guitars, and 4/5 string acoustic basses.

Here's another vote for the Peterson tuner. Absolutely worth every dime.

I had a problem with mine. The screen froze. I guess it was a problem with the tuner being plugged in to a hot power supply. They fixed and returned it to me in the time that it would have taken to just send a new one. Great service!!!! I'm very glad that it was repaired and not just tossed. It tells me that it's not a disposable item like a microwave or cell phone, etc.
I love this tuner. I do setups on guitars and basses and it's faster and more accurate than all those other tuners.

Korg DT-3 is the best I've found. Has everything but a needle, works inline, and has hz or cents.

DD I still don't se any problem with the Pod xt tuner registering any strings unless I don't pedal-on a strong signal. I don't like the bypass function knocking out all the processing.

Oh well. I alway have my DT-3 but it's just less trouble with the xt for now.

Or, is this the best tuner for steel? I've got the old model and love it. Apparently this new model does a great job of auto tuning. Real visible in the dark too.

Brad,
This PST had my vote till I saw the price...
Nice tuner, but I think that kind of money would be better served elsewhere ... Not knocking the unit...I'd love to have one, but I don't need one THAT badly....It's nice to see that there's something like this out there though for those who can afford it ...Jim

For an economical tuner, try a Fender chromatic. They go for about 30 bucks, are rugged, and small enough to fit in your pack-a-seat.

One note on the PST tuner. Call the guy, he has "student" discounts. That's how I was able to get one a few years ago. His list price is way high I agree.

I bought a new boss tu12h last summer and due to health reasons didnot get to use it until recently the needle is so unstable that it is not usable, has anybody run into this situation or have a solution? Bob
