Effects Units

Post by David Deratany »

Those of you who have looked into buying an effects unit likely found, as I did, a staggering array of them. Having already made one mistake by buying a unit that requires an effects loop, I am calling on the experiences of the members here to help me find what's right for me.

To be used primarily for guitar, it should be capable of compression, stereo chorus, delay and fuzz and as little else as possible. I am aware of the pros and cons of pre and post volume pedal considerations. I need it to work properly without going through an effects loop, somethnig two of my amps lack.

I got the POD XT for that reason mainly. The amp modelling is cool and I use it too. But you can turn off the amps and just use the effects. They are great. They've modelled many of the classic pedals that guitarists love. Great delays, reverbs, phasers, distortions, fuzzes, compressors, flangers, choruses, envelope filter, and more. Great multi effect unit. And it has guitar level inputs so it works real well before the amp, avoiding the effects loop. It's the best piece I've seen for steelers. It can sit right next to you and all the quick controls you need are right there.

The POD Pro models are rack mountable and have stereo outputs. The regular PODs may have stereo outs also, but I don't know. Haven't played with the XT yet, but the old one does all I'll ever need.

I took a look at them; they are nice, but they overwhelm me with things I don't want to do, as did the Pandora DX-4. I'm really looking to keep it simple, unless those days are gone for good.

The PODxt is easy to use. The best thing is that they've modelled the actual pedals and effects units that have proven themselves to be the guitarists' favorites. You can get a multi effects unit but you cant be assured that the phaser, chorus, delay, distortion, filters, and others are going to be great sounding. The PODxt uses the classic pedal sounds because the actually modelled the real things. I'm generally not a fan of digital toys, but the PODxt really impresses me.

Go to Ebay and pick up a Boss SE-70, then contact me and I will help you program it.

There is a Digitech 2112 on the forum below that will also work well. Front control knobs, two 12AX7 tubes and many effects. The price is right.
