Bill Lawrence pickup question....

I've got a couple of pickups that look like Lawrence 705's with the twin blades, but the rim around the pickups are black instead of chrome. Can anyone identify these for me?

Thanks Ricky. What's the difference in the 705 and the 805? (Besides one having a chrome rim and the other a black rim)

I've had them both in an Emmons I had once...and they were awesome....and it's been too long to remember what the difference was....as one thing I do remember is:. "I don't remember there being a difference".

These are pickups were made by a California company run by his EX-partner not by Bill Lawrence who made the silver housed pickups.
Our experience with the reliability of these pickups has not been any where near as good as the silver housed ones.

To find out what model pickup you have, measure the DC Resistance and compare it to the numbers below.

705 - approximately 18K-21K Ohms, 15H inductance
805 - approximately 26K Ohms, 21H inductance
605 - approximately 15K Ohms, 11H inductance
505 - approximately 12K Ohms, 7.5H inductance

Hey John; I guess I need a history lesson if you have a minute to answer a few feable questions.
So did Bill ever design a 805? or was that just his ex-partner and did his ex-partner call it a lawrence pickup or just 805?
Did all the blade pickups that Bill made; have a chrome housing??
So are all the NON-chrome housing blade pickups; made by his Ex?
what exactly did Bill design/Make.>>

Hey Ricky, I've still got both of them. Actually, one of them is a 705 (E9) and the 805 is on my C6.
BTW, does anyone have a email address for Bill Lawrence?
Also BTW, what happened to the forum links to all that info????

Oh yeah Chris; that's where those two pickups went..ah...ha...Now I remember...> I took them off to put E66's on because that's what Gary Carpenter had in his Emmons....and well you know the rest from there..

FWIW guys, back in the 80's, I had these pups at various times....the 605, 705 and 805...best I remember, I got them all from the Jackson Guitar Co. in Nashville...they all had chrome housings and looked identical....the only way you can tell one from the other is to measure the resistance per John Fabian's reply...all of the ones I had came in a circular plastic box and had the model numbers on the card...along with Bill Lawerence's name...

That guy was never a 'partner' of Bill's. George Lewis was a partner. The black surrounds are not Bill's. Yes, from some input from some players, Bill made from 505 up to 805 blade designs. Same wire, the only difference being the number of wraps. George L has carried on with the 'blade' design, which Bill now considers outdated/incomplete/insufficient compared to his current designs due to the evolution of his design theory.

Whatever the relationship, Jzchak Wajcman basically lessened the quality of the original Lawrence pickups.
