AKG D112 For Mic'ing Steel
Has anyone ever tried using this mic for mic'ing your steel amp?
Frequency range is 20hz to 17000hz
Thanks

A D-112 will work if you do a little EQ tweaking but a better choice is a Sennheiser 421 or 441. That is what I like to use on a steel amp - they're like SM-57s on steroids. I've had excellent luck also coming out of the XLR preamp out on the back of a Session 400 and going right to the board or my favorite mic pre and then straight to tape - it's like splitting the difference between miking an amp and going direct. -MJ-
[This message was edited by Michael Johnstone on 26 July 2003 at 10:58 AM.]

Ditto to the above. I had a D-112 and it was great for a bass drum, which is what it was designed for. Bad choice for steel IMHO. Stick with the SM 57. Play around with the positioning. Probably about 3" off center to the speaker would be a good starting place. Also, go direct to a mic pre-amp (not to the mixer) then straight to tape.
