Old Standel Amp

Post by Francis Chamberlain »

I have an old Standel Amp with a 15 inch
JBL speaker. It is the "Studio" model.
I would say it is at least 30 years old.
Could anyone tell me about what it would
be worth?

$400-$600, depending on the condition
If it were the old tube job -- like the 25L15, it would be a different story.

I have a pair of near mint condition, identical 1970 Custom 15's and wouldn't trade them for the world. (well, maybe for the WORLD) Image

Do you have the Solid State model Studio XV?

If so, $300.

I bought a Standel Imperial XV piggy-back amp from Irby Mandrell in 1961 and got rid of it in '63 for a Fender Super Reverb because of the reverb. I have regretted letting it go for almost 40 years. They were the Rolls Royce of amps and meeting Bob Crooks at the factory was a thrill.

The Imperial XV was the first of the solid state Standels, a piggy back with a trapazoidal bass reflex cabinet. I traded an Ampeg VT22 straight across for one, it's sitting next to one of my Christmas trees. These are great sounding amps.

You might want to take a look at this: http://www.ece.villanova.edu/~cdanjo/standel/standel.html

The old Standel SS amps, with the original germanium transistors, are as tubelike as any solid state amp I've ever played through. I play through two of them most every weekend and the only thing that scares me a bit is their age, but they kick like mules and sound great in every room I've used them in -- including the studio -- where the engineer raved about the sound.
