Pick-up placement

Post by Todd Pertll »

What is everyone's opinion on placing a pickup close to the neck? I'm curious what kind of sounds you could get with two pickups in two different positions.

Pickups are usually located under a harmonic (like you hear at the 12th fret). Find a harmonic near the point you want to try and it will bring out that characteristic.

Todd,

Use the Fender Stringmaster for a reference point. It has two pickups. Just like a six string, the one closest to the bridge will sound treble, and the one close to the neck will sound more bass. The Stringmaster blended these two with a knob/pot located under the bridge cover.

Hope this helps.

"Close to the neck"? Though it's not obvious exactly what you mean (if you're talking about a steel guitar), it will, as Ron said, give you a "fuller" sound. Most steel guitar manufacturers don't do this as the pickup tends to get in the way of left or right hand, when placed in "other than standard" positions.
