Evans preAmp + Lxp-1 + Lxp-5

Post by Gary Steele »

I am getting quite a bit of noise not sure it is hooked up right can someone tell me how. Also where do you set the rear volumes. I cant get my input lights to light up on the Lxp -1 It seems like it is gonna sound great when i get it tuned in. Seems like the volume and punch is much better then the stereo steel. Why i dont know.
Thankls,
Gary.

Well, Gary, that's exactly the preamp/fx setup Mr. John has used most every time I've seen him in the past 10 years, so it is a good choice and, in the right hands, can sound great. You can't beat Lexicon verb.

I suspect your problem is in the gain structure, since there are both input and output attenuation on all three devices. I'd suggest two things:
1. Turn the OUTPUT wide open (especially on the last device in the chain). Use the INPUT gain to get enough signal without overdriving the next device.
2. To avoid overdriving the input, especially on the LXP's, turn up the input until you light up the red overdrive/clip led, then back it off a couple of notches. No idea why the green led won't come on. Maybe the led itself is bad. I usually have the opposite problem -- the RED comes on too easily. Just remember that the signal from device 1 feeds the input of 2 and on until you get to the power amp.

AS A TEST,
Plug your guitar as straight in as possible. No volume pedal, no effects. If you're using separate pre- and power amps, find a good, noise-free setting on the preamp. Set the power amp to a reasonable volume and play a chord and note the volume. Now, add the other stuff to the signal chain. Is it much louder? Is there noise? If so, back up on the input gain on the LXP-1 and/or LXP-5.

That's how I usually find the right combination of gain settings for that type of rig. Same is true for a combo amp, but you don't have to be as picky if you're using a steel amp since they are voiced for steel and usually don't break up very easily, even when the pre-gain is higher than the post.

Hope that helps.
