Pre amp into a regular amp question??

I have a Peavey Vegas 400 which has two channels - Can I come out of a different Pre amp and go into (power amp in) with Steel and at the same time run Lead guitar into the second channel on the Vegas direct??

Ron, You only have one power amp in on a Vegas, so when you plug in to it, it defeats the complete front end, and not just one channel. T am sure that's how it works. It works on my Nashville that way.

Ron I've done before but, you'll have to use a A-B switch box. Run both pre-amps to the A-B box and run the box's output to the amps power-amp input. That worked fine for me. Here's something else to try if your amp has a post eq effects loop with the foot switch to turn the loop on or off. Plug your other pre-amp into the fx loop return and use the foot switch to switch from one pre-amp to the other. I use a Bandit this way, the only thing is that if I use the amps reverb it will work for the other pre-amp also. Hope this will help.

I sometimes use a DOD 240 resistance mixer, around $40.00 to plug in up to 4 preamps into one power amp. It does cut your signal, however, so if you play very loud you might not like it. Another option is the newer Behringer mixers. They are small, inexpensive and offer from 2 up to 16 channels of good clean mixing. They do have gain controls and eq that you could set flat and experiment. I use one to mix my instruments into one of my Fender channels. I haven't tried it with preamps, such as the Nashville. It might be too hot. I have used Evans and Mesa Boogies with my Mackie 1604 and had great results, so if the gain structure is set properly, I think it should work. The smallest Behringer mixer I have seen is only $59.99 at Musicians Friend. Might be worth a shot. If you don't like it, I need another one, LOL.

Sorry, I see you have a Vegas, I saw Nashville in one of the other posts.
Since your vegas has a two channel preamp, but only one preamp out, it would still work with the DOD or the Behringer. You would just have another channel available. With the DOD you could have up to 5 channels if you wanted to run that many preamps.

Or you could do what I do with my Fender Dual Showman: Use one channel for steel exclusively and plug the Behringer (or similar) mixer into the other. I use 6 instruments total on my Sunday shows, all through my Fender which has worked very well for me. Steel goes into the Vibrato channel by itself. Into the mixer and the Normal channel I run Dobro, Fiddle, El. Guitar, Mandolin and Banjo. I use McIntyre, Barcus Berry and Fishman pickups on the acoustic instruments which are all hot enough to not require separate preamps, running them through the mixer and into the channel is enough.
